Pam Gardner to remain on board as Astros president of business operations

HOUSTON -- Jim Crane made it known Thursday that Pam Gardner will remain with the Astros as president of business operations.

Crane, whose tenure begins next Tuesday as the Astros' new owner, refused to comment regarding the status of president of baseball operations Tal Smith and general manager Ed Wade.

However, he identified former Houston Rockets CEO George Postolos once again as the one in charge of running the day-to-day operations prior to mentioning Gardner's decision to stay.

Postolos and Gardner have a strong business relationship.

"George, on the day-to-day basis, will be in charge," Crane said. "I have assembled a number of different teams in my businesses. My job is to make sure the team is functioning properly, as far as management goes. Pam Gardner is going to continue to stay with us. She’s got a lot of experience. It’s fun to be around her. She does a great job and knows a lot of people. She’ll be a great help to us. We’re really going to assess the people we have in the system and work to their strengths.

"On the baseball side, that’s our first order of business. We need to look at what we have and make some decisions one way or another."

Gardner recently completed her 11th season as president of business operations, as she oversees business and financial aspects for the club.

This includes all revenue areas, customer service, building and financial operations, sponsorship and ticket sales, as well as community marketing, public relations and special events.

Under Gardner's guidance, the Astros have been one of the most consistently ranked Major League Baseball teams at drawing attendance.

Gardner became the first female executive inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame and was a 2008 recipient of the Marguerite Ross Barnett leadership award from the Houston Area Urban League.

She has previously been recognized by Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal as one of the 20 Most Influential Women in Sports.
