Brody Barrios, assistant wrestling coach at Palomar College for the past five years, has been promoted to head coach, the school outside San Diego announced Tuesday.
Barrios replaces Byron Campbell, who stepped down after seven seasons as head coach of the Comets.
Barrios also serves as wrestling coach at San Marcos High School. He was a two-time California state champ at Poway High in the 1990s, where he was 47-2 as a junior, and 57-2 as a senior. He later wrestled at Cal Poly, where he earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology. He acquired a masters in education from National University.
Since the founding of the Palomar wrestling program in 1970, the Comets can claim 117 All-Americans and 33 state champions.
Palomar College is a public, two-year community college located in San Marcos, Calif., about 30 miles north of San Diego. It has a student enrollment of 24,000.
