Palo Alto police searching for armed bank robber

Palo Alto police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a gunman who robbed a local credit union Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say the gunman entered Provident Credit Union at about 3:30 p.m., brandished a black handgun at the tellers, and demanded money. The tellers complied with his demands and he fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect was last seen headed northbound on the sidewalk of El Camino Real near Cambridge Avenue.

Police arrived on scene and conducted a thorough search for the suspect with negative results.

Witnesses described the gunman as being a white man in his 30s and about 6’1” with a scar near his right eye. He was wearing a white baseball cap, a tan shirt, tan jacket, and flip-flops at the time of the robbery. Witnesses reported that he was carrying a bright yellow plastic shopping back with a black “Forever 21” logo on it.

Palo Alto police have released surveillance photos of the suspect during the commission of the robbery in the hopes that someone will be able to identify him. Anyone who may recognize the man in the photos or has information on the robbery is urged to contact Palo Alto police at (650) 329-2413.
