At the very end of the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, Carrollton Avenue intersects with South Claiborne Avenue. There is a large, block square park on the upriver side. This urban oasis provides ample open space for running, sunning, and play. There are walkways and benches and a monument in the park's center.
Facing Carrollton Ave is an attractive white arch bearing the park's name: Palmer Park. While there are old shade trees scattered around, they don't dominate the park scape. This is a place of verdant lawns and elbow room.
The last Saturday of every month the New Orleans Arts Council holds a market featuring Louisiana and Mississippi based artists to show and sell their wares. The market runs between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM and has no admission fee. Everything on display is handmade and original. There is live entertainment as well as food and beverage booths. Again, there's no admission charge.
The Art Market's website is here. It is a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon in pleasant surroundings. The streetcar ride from Canal Street or points in between is enough reason to take the trip.
