The nation's capital will be the fifth stop in the 14-city tour of the Palm Springs Summer Splash Cocktail Challenge, sponsored by the City of Palm Springs, Cali., with support from Here Media and Alaska Airlines.
As part of the challenge, the best professional and amateur bartenders from across North America are being asked to stir up their own signature Palm Springs-inspired cocktails. The cocktails will be judged on taste, presentation and appearance, and the bartenders will also be judged on creativity and attire as well as audience participation.
Now in its fourth year, this is the first time that Washington has been selected to participate. And Number Nine will have the honor of hosting this hunt for D.C.'s top bartender Thursday, March 21, starting at 7 p.m. There will be drink specials and giveaways for all attendees.
The winning bartender will receive a trip to gay-friendly Palm Springs to compete against the winners from each of the other participating cities in a grand challenge on May 30. The event will also mark the start of the Desert Gay Tourism Guild's Summer Splash program with many of the city's accommodations, bars and restaurants offering special promotions for summer visitors.
Palm Springs is home to nearly 30 gay-owned/operated resorts and guesthouses, including many that are clothing optional. Information on traveling to Palm Springs is available at VisitGayPalmSprings.com.
Travel Note: Daily connecting flights are available to the Palm Springs International Airport from the Washington, D.C. area.
