Palm Springs High teams up with legendary Olympian for fundraiser

Local Palm Springs High School ASB has teamed up with school faculty member and 1968 Olympian, John Carlos for an enlightening fundraiser opportunity. Dr. Carlos has agreed to autograph copies of his hardcover autobiography, The John Carlos Story (Haymarket Books, Fall 2011) for those interested in purchasing it. Proceeds raised from the sale of the books will go to the Associated Student Body fund to help with upcoming school events planned throughout the school year.

John Carlos won the bronze medal for the 200-meters relay during the 1968 Olympics. Known as one of the defining moments in sports history, he came under ridicule after giving the black power salute while on the podium. Many watching the event were outraged that he (along with fellow African American teammate Tommie Smith) would do such a thing.

The autobiography is an easy read that highlights Dr. Carlos' early life growing up in Harlem and what happened in his life after the backlash of the notorious 1968 Olympic event. It's not often that high school students get to be in the company of someone from rather recent American history, so take a couple hours away from your busy schedules, put down the TV remote and pick up a copy of The John Carlos Story.

The books are $20 each and can be purchased from any member of the ASB, while supplies last.
