Palm Beach State College helps pave the way for green workforce

Palm Beach-area businesses take note: Palm Beach State College is taking the lead in grooming future green workers.

“Palm Beach State is in a unique position to partner with industry in creating a transformative green economy that will benefit generations of Floridians,” said Dr. Jay Matteson, director of Palm Beach State’s Institute for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (IEES), in the Winter issue of the college’s Contact magazine.

IEES was conceived to prepare students for careers in all the emerging green industry sectors, including renewable energy, clean technology, advanced transportation, and agro-biotechnology.

For example, the Biotechnology department focuses on the bioanalytics of turning cellulose into biofuel. Meanwhile, the Electrical Power Technology program teaches the use of alternative and renewable energy sources for power generation and distribution.

The College’s two-year Associate in Science program started in 2009 and has since added elective courses in alternative and renewable energy. A one-year College Credit Certificate in Alternative Energy Engineering Technology is also available, and the College is considering adding programs in smart grid and energy management technology to the curriculum.
