In 2014, the Palm Beach International Raceway™ will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an incredible line‐up of exciting motorsports events on its Road Course, Drag Strip, Kart Track and Mud Bog. Along with an enhanced company logo to commemorate the occasion, PBIR will be launching a new anniversary collection of merchandise including apparel, hats and collectibles.
“Having recently been named as the head of the facility, I’m thrilled to be at the helm during this exciting time in the company’s history,” noted Dale Gann, Vice President and General Manager of PBIR. “I’m looking forward to welcoming back all of our race fans and meeting new ones, as we celebrate 50 years of motorsports at PBIR.”
The facility has a long and storied history. It was opened in 1964 by owners Joe Bucheck Jr and his brother Edward. In 1969, the facility hosted the Palm Beach Pop Festival featured The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane. It was an event that was inspired by Woodstock, but suffered from fire ants, and an uncooperative sheriff's department, among other issues.
In 1971, the Air Show and Grand American Series of Professional Drag Racing events were held at the speedway. The Air Show took full advantage of the track's proximity to Pratt and Whitney aircraft, and showcased the air powr of the Vietnam era.
In 1979, famous Indy 500 racer Lyn St. James made her professional debut at PBIR. She went on to compete in numerous racing series during her long and successful career.
In 1981, Dick Moroso purchased the facility and renamed it Moroso Motorsports Park, inaugurating a new era for motorsports in the Palm Beaches. The following year, Moroso created one of the first ever $10K Big Money Bracket Races; a race that continues to this day at the track.
Five years ago, the facility acquired by IRG Sports + Entertainment™ (IRG) and renamed PBIR.
“There has never been a better time to come to PBIR – with legendary events from PRO Winter Warm‐up to the Citrus Nationals being held at our track,” said Jason Rittenberry, CFE, President and Chief Executive Officer of IRG, the parent company of PBIR. “Whether you’re a fan of exotic supercars, local sportsman racing, top fuel dragsters, funny cars, motorcycles – or you race your own street car – PBIR has an event in 2014 for you.”
At each of PBIR’s major events throughout the year, race fans will be treated to special trackside surprises such as giveaways, complimentary tickets, and added entertainment. A few of the featured events for 2014 include:
