The Palm Beach Cardinals, along with the rest of the system, has released their 2014 roster.
The team is planning on carrying 3 catchers: Casey Rasmus, Jesus Montero, and Adam Ehrlich. Rasmus spent the end of 2013 at Springfield, but there is a back log of catchers in the middle of the system. Ehrlich is going to start the season on the DL, so Montero will get a shot to split time with Rasmus.
The infield has a lot of potential. Jacob Wilson is one of the top prospects on the team; he’ll be the everyday second baseman. His double play partners will be Alex Mejia and Ildemaro Vargas. The cornets will be manned by David Washington and Danny Stienstra, who will start the season on the DL. Breyvic Valera will see some time at second, but is listed on the Palm Beach roster as an outfielder; he could also see time at third while Stienstra is out.
The outfield is also full of potential. Charlie Tilson is a top 10 prospect in the system and will start the season at the level he finished 2013 at; he’ll be the starting centerfielder. Starlin Rodriguez will also get some time in center, but figures to see more time at the corners. Anthony Garcia is a masher who’s repeating Hi A to reduce his strikeouts. Nick Martini and Steven Ramos will probably be more back up/pinch hitters for the team.
The pitching staff is headed by 2 first round picks: Tyrell Jenkins and Marco Gonzales. Jenkins will start the season on the DL; he’s recovering from lat surgery at the end of last season and probably won’t be ready until May. Gonzales, who pitched 1 game in big league camp, should be the ace of the staff; if he pitches to his potential, he will probably finish the season at Double A. The rest of the staff includes righties Joe Cuda, Corey Baker, Thomas Lee, Dixon Llorens, Aidan Lucas, Michael Mayers, Robert Stock and Sam Tuivailala along with lefties Kyle Hald, Kyle Helisek and Iden Nazario.
