Gov. Palin State of the State Address 2009
It seems that now Obama has been installed as U.S. President, the anti-Palin propaganda-mongers are focused elsewhere. So not too much attention has been paid to the something that Palin and Obama now have in common: the renewable energy needs of the United States (U.S.).
Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) recently announced her goals for wind, geothermal, tidal and wave energy programs. These resources have now been added to Alaska's most abundant resources, oil and gas. Not many people know that Alaska already gets about 25 percent of its electricity from dams. It has been way ahead of the rest of the U.S. in that and also planning for geothermal use.
Already authorized by the Alaska legislature is $100 million for renewable enegry projects. Shortly, 77 projects, ranging from wind farms to landfill gas recovery, will receive funding. (Anchorage Daily News, 1/16/2009) The plan includes both urban Alaska, including Anchorage, Fairbanks and other cities and also the hundreds of villages off the road system and power grid.
Pat Lavin, an attorney for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) called Palin's announcement "a defining moment in Alaska's history." It seems that the conservation organizations that demeaned her energy programs previously have climbed on Palin's bandwagon. Perhaps even Obama may now look to Palin for advice about how the U.S. can achieve its renewable energy goals.
