Paisty Jenny and Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience top Thursday's concerts

Thursday night has become a night of karaoke, open jams, and comedy in a lot of the Des Moines venues, but there are still some quality concerts out there if you look hard enough. Here are two suggestions for tonight.

Tonight, Krazee Kafe will host Lincoln, Nebraska rockers Paisty Jenny at 7 p.m. Opening the show will be Des Moines rock quintet Devil's Deck. (The venue has hinted that there will be more bands added at the last minute, but they will not be announcing any names before show time tonight.) Tickets are $5 at the door. St. Joseph, Iowa native (and current St. Cloud, Minnesota resident) Shaun Johnson returns to Iowa tonight for a 7:30 p.m. concert at the Urbandale High School Performing Arts Center. Not to be confused with Iowa gymnast Shawn Johnson, Shaun Johnson is an Emmy-winning singer/songwriter who started his career as part of the vocal group Tonic Sol-fa. Tonight, he brings the Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience to the Metro to play a show that "blends the musical stylings of Tony Bennett and Michael Buble to create a contemporary big band sound with a pop flair." [Shaun Johnson website] Tickets for the concert are $15 for those 18 and under and $25 for those over 18, and they can be purchased online through MidwesTix.
