The Bowery Gallery in Chelsea is currently presenting several recent paintings by Lynette Lombard for the exhibition Night and Day. For her third solo show at the gallery, Lombard offers her latest collection of paintings that illustrate the beauty of rural, southern Spain, and Illinois. She incorporates the baroque style into her paintings that take place either during day or night, and are images of nature and the outdoors. With her swift brushstrokes, she illustrates the rapid forces moving through mountains, and the rising and sinking valleys and skies. The colors she uses are both light and heavy which helps bring the image together with a sensuous light.
Lombard has received Mellon grants to Spain and Berlin and several research grants from Knox College to paint in Spain. She does her landscape paintings both in Illinois and Spain, where she spends part of every year, and in her studio.
At the Bowery Gallery, 530 W. 25th St., through Dec. 22.
