Paciencia:How did the vision for your makeup store begin?
Suzanne Patterson:My husband and I are very mission oriented in our personal and professional lives, as we both have worked our entire careers in service types of occupations. I have been a makeup artist working in the film and TV industry for nearly 40 years, and also teach makeup workshops. My husband, a retired Army Colonel, who served 28 years, is still serving as a civilian architect/engineer for the Army. The makeup store, Paint and Powder Cosmetics was a vision we both shared, that would be a means of pooling our talents and resources towards creating an income stream for humanitarian/charity efforts. Being faith based Christians, we were particularly drawn to children’s orphanages that have been established in the most destitute region of the world. We really had a heart for the most helpless of all, abandoned newborn babies, which is nearly an epidemic in South Africa. There are some great organizations out there that serve homeless and needy children, but Baby Haven specifically focuses on rescuing abandon newborns, providing them with immediate life saving medical care, and providing a loving home environment until they are adopted. It was the perfect marriage of our efforts for them, and their efforts in saving the most helpless of humanity, being newborn lives.
Paciencia:
Does Paint and Powders cosmetics give 100% of their proceeds to a charity?
Suzanne Patterson:
Paint and Powder Cosmetics has been in operation for about 8 years now, and we have proudly become a major income stream for Baby Haven’s rescue operations and orphanage. After our operating overhead expenses are covered each month, the proceeds go to Baby Haven. We also support a couple of other important charities, Every Child Fed.org and the Wounded Warriors program, which serves disabled military Veterans.
Paciencia:
Tell us a little about what your store provides for the Baby Haven and their community?
Suzanne Patterson:
Each year we hold an event that is a fundraiser for Baby Haven. We gather a lot of “seconds” from different makeup companies, and also gently used and sanitized makeup from pros that are available at dollar store prices. We also have pro artistry technique demos, and great raffle prizes, along with great food. It’s a terrific makeup artist “Meet, Greet, Chat, Eat and Networking” event, and each year we try to add a new feature. We charge a $5 admission and it’s cash only purchases at the “dollar store”. Last year we raised nearly $2,000 in one afternoon, and that’s nearly half of the operations costs for Baby Haven for one month! Our goal this year is to double or triple that amount, and 100% of the proceeds of this event goes directly to Baby Haven.
Paciencia:
What does brand authenticity mean on your website?
Suzanne Patterson:
Brand Authenticity is like a “product” mission statement, which we have on the front page of our website. It means that we only sell products that come fresh and directly to us from the manufacturers that we are authorized to sell for. We believe in upholding high integrity in our business practices, so we don’t involve our products with any third party entities, such as EBay, Amazon, any other consignment type of entity, foreign or domestic. This is particularly important for our own house brand, Natural Born Cosmetics, which is hugely popular among pros and consumers. We also do not sell any brands with protected international distributorships or cooperative agreements to countries or retailers outside of North America. This policy honors and insures our brand loyalty, so that our vendors and customers receive the highest standard in ethical business practices along with top quality products.
Paciencia:
Tell the people briefly how they will be supporting Baby Haven this year when they buy cosmetics from Paint and powder cosmetics?
Suzanne Patterson:
We continue to bring in new products every month, so our vast selection continues to grow for both, beauty and special makeup effects needs, as well as the best skin care available for pros and consumers alike. As I have said previously, purchases in our store contribute to the proceeds we give Baby Haven on a monthly basis. We are so happy that our growth in sales has translated to increased proceeds overall each year for Baby Haven. We have never gone backwards, so we feel very blessed to be able to keep our charity mission forward and upward!
Paciencia:
It was really great meeting with Suzanne. I will be bringing many more exclusive interviews with Suzanne, as well as updates for new products available at http://paintandpowderstore.com Remember when you are buying beauty products from them you are also changing a child's life.
