The Indianapolis Colts squeaked by with a 21-17 win over the Oakland Raiders in week 1. Along with the great moments, there are some major opportunities for improvement. Heading into their week 2 match-up with the Miami Dolphins, the Colts have a list of things to work on to keep their winning streak alive. Colts Head Coach, Chuck Pagano, is confident his team will do what they need to do to get the job done.
Week 1: Oakland Raiders
During his press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Pagano addressed the main concern of fans regarding the Colts week 1 game against the Raiders. The offensive line had its moments, but what will be remembered about that game is amount of pressure put on the quarterback.
Andrew Luck was sacked four times throughout the course of the game. He was rushed, forced to scramble and hit more times than fans would like to see. Pagano assured the press the idea of protecting the Luck tops their list of importance.
The Colts CEO, Jim Irsay, also had something to say about protecting Luck. Irsay tweeted "Raider/Colts-- we gotta protect #12 better..and that includes more than just OL...it's backs,TE's,coaches on blitz pick ups..I DEMAND better."
In an earlier press conference on Monday, Pagano displayed the faith he has in the offensive line. He attributed the pressure on Luck to a lack of communication and technique. Both of these issues can be quickly addressed.
On Wednesday, Pagano put some of the heat on Luck. Quarterbacks in the NFL are always learning, growing and improving. Andrew Luck is no different. Going into his second season, Luck still has some things to learn.
"He could have managed plays better," said Pagano of Luck as he addressed the four sacks in week 1. Luck will continue to work on getting rid of the ball faster and throwing it away when necessary.
Week 2: Miami Dolphins
Going into their match-up with Miami, the Colts are focused on every aspect of the game. In their game against the Cleveland Browns, the Dolphins only rushed for 20 yards. That will not stop the Colts from making sure they work on their run defense. Pagano knows the Dolphins will work on their run game. He made it clear he will not discount any aspect of the Dolphins' game.
The Colts realize the fight will be tough, but their will and determination will drive them to play hard for the entire game. Pagano dubbed the game a "60-minute slug fest" because he knows it will be a close one. He stated that the team who plays the best football and makes less mistakes will be the one on top when the clock hits zero.
Irsay also tweeted about what the Colts will need to do to get the victory in week 2. "Dolphin/Colts-Make no mistake about it/The Fish CAN and WILL bring the HEAT...We gotta MAN-UP and confront HEAT with a NASA-like Heat-Shield."
