According to a report on ProBoxingInsider.com Wednesday night, Manny Pacquiao's people have been in contact with the camp of Floyd Mayweather about putting the two together.
For years, this was the dream match that fans have always wanted, but were continuously denied. Following the stunning victory of Juan Manuel Marquez over Manny Pacquiao last November, it seemed all hopes for that fight ever being made had been dashed. Lately, however, there have been rumblings from various sources that there was still a possibility that the two biggest names in the sport could still face off at some point.
This interview confirms what many have been hoping. However, just because contact has been made, that is no assurance an agreement can be made. Obviously financial considerations could still be the major sticking point. Clearly Manny Pacquiao has less bargaining room considering his recent performances. It remains to be seen if he can accept what would certainly be less money than previously offered, or if he will still demand a sum in line with what he could have demanded a year ago.
Jeff Mayweather is the uncle of Floyd Mayweather. Although he is not directly involved with the decision making of his nephew, he often serves as an advisor. When asked about the possibility of the fight between Manny Pacquiao ever being made, he confirmed that Pacquiao's people had contacted him directly.
"I've been contacted by Manny's people personally," he said when asked if the fight would ever be made. "Now they want the fight because they know if the fight doesn't happen now, it's not going to be worth anything."
Given the public outrage over the possibilities floating around about the next opponent for Floyd Mayweather being Robert Guerrero or Devon Alexander, is it possible that the delay in naming his next opponent is because there are ongoing negotiations to make this fight happen? May is fast approaching and soon the announcement will have to be made. Considering the promise of the May 4th card being something special, it would make sense. And although the best time for that fight may have been several years ago, it's impossible to deny that it is one fight that would truly electrify the boxing world.
