Unable to land his signature punch, the straight left, Manny Pacquiao nevertheless overwhelmed Joshua Clottey in a subtle performance Saturday that did not dilute his legacy.

Pacquiao (51-3-2) won a unanimous decision, all 12 rounds on one scorecard and 11 on the other two, to retain the WBO welterweight title in Arlington, Texas, at the Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium.

Jabbing and mounting a ferocious body attack, Pacquiao compensated brilliantly for his inability to land cleanly to the face. He established from the outset that he could preoccupy Clottey and discourage him from mounting an attack of his own. Pacquiao, landing only 246 punches but throwing 1,231, was three times as busy as Clottey.

Clottey did manage to hit Pacquiao with three or four uppercuts and five or six counter rights to the noggin’. But he did NOTHING else, except blocking hundreds of punches.

Nobody was going to give such an unaggressive challenger a decision in a fight like that. I gave him the fifth and sixth rounds, when Pacquiao moved less and invited Clottey to open up more, which he did a few times.

And that was that. By the seventh, it was obvious Clottey knew better than we did how badly he was outclassed. Maybe Pacquiao didn’t come close to a knockout, but Clottey obviously didn’t doubt it was possible.

“I think he’s feeling Pacquiao’s power,” Clottey’s trainer Lenny DeJesus said during a late-rounds interview with HBO.

Clottey (35-4), whose previous losses were narrow ones to Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito and a disqualification against Carlos Baldimir, gave Pacquiao his due. “He has (too much) speed,” Clottey said. “It was the first time I’ve lost a fight.”

In explaining his caution, Clottey praised Pacquiao. “He was waiting for me to open up so he could counter me.” Clearly Clottey felt that would be a lot worse than the 12 rounds of frustration and futility that ensued instead.

“It was not an easy fight,” Pacquiao conceded. But he didn’t let that frustrate him. “I wasn’t in a hurry because he was looking for a big shot, an opening.”

When he wasn’t bobbing and weaving and dodging and ducking, that is.

If there was any assumption that Clottey could have turned the tide by showing more courage, the 11th round ended that. Clottey mounted his only sustained attack of the fight, and Pacquiao answered every assault with more impressive flurries of his own.

Following his amazing victories against seemingly larger men in the past 16 months, over Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Cotto, the whuppin’ Pacquiao administered Saturday was as lopsided as his other three and in its own way just as impressive.

there is only one thing in clottey's mind after felling the power of the pacman.....i'd better cover no matter what until its over..thats what it is.

  • Manny Pompyang 2 years ago

As if one hand isn't enough, Manny have to resort and borrow FPJ's and Lito Lapid's MANO A MANO arsenal the famous POMPYANG punch where they hit their opponents with an assortment of punches and end it with a left and right slap in the ear. I thought that was just outrageously funny and for KFC a double slap in the rear would even be more funnier. KFC get ready for a whoopin' from PACQUAIO. Can't wait to see MANNY give your two ass cheeks some whoopin or maybe make your face look like a red AMPALAYA. Good luck because you'll need a lot of that.

Clottey did not just demonstrate his shell-like defense, he was actually a turtle hiding in its shell. He said he didn't feel Manny's power punches, that he was in no occassion hurt by Manny. Then, why was he so busy covering up the whole time Manny was unleashing his bombs on him? I continue to wonder.

  • The Truth 2 years ago

Meh. Everyone knows that there are no more challenges left for Pacquiao after the Cotto match.

No boxer in this planet can defeat or at least give Pacquiao a decent workout.

The only highlight of the fight was that silly double punch that Pacquiao pulled off just to make the fight a bit interesting and funny in a ridiculous way.

  • gene 2 years ago

I was excited prior to the pacquiao vs clottey fight. Until the 5th round was done, boredom and disappointment took control of my senses because I'd realized pacquiao was fighting a turtle. I'd rather watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting bad guys.

  • cherryfloyd 2 years ago

who's the ref anyway? he sucked! he should've warned Clottey for not even trying to fight! clottey was afraid to get knocked he was contendted to just not be knocked by not fighting at all! Manny was still great though, as always...

  • #1 floydfan 2 years ago

What's so impressive with that? Floyd would've finished Clottey more impressively.

    Pacquiao's Double Punch Super Move:

down 2 seconds, 360 degrees 5x, forward, down, down, up 5 seconds, press all buttons from all connected controllers simultaneously

he,he, quite a friendly match...Clottey's disappointing; He said he can't feel manny's punches but was hiding in his bunker of arms. he,he...Manny tried everything to fought a good fight for the fans who supported and paid to watch them. Clottey's uncooperative but was only concern to save his life. But his tough though, kudos to the fighters anyway. Mabuhay ka Manny!

Fcuk U!..chicken would be running the whole 12 rnds..if he fought Clottey..

  • #1 floydfan 2 years ago

LOL that's evading not running, pactard

  • lex 2 years ago

Clottey is a big coward who fought scared against smaller lighter opponent. He was not only outclassed by manny but also by the the three cowboy cheeleaders who were far more entertaining than joshua when they sang the u.s national anthem.

  • Diego 2 years ago

It may not be a great fight..(thanks to Clottey)...but Packy did really good out there...It's just that Clottey did not fought the way he should.

  • ReXy 2 years ago

A supposedly exciting fight turned BUM... Wished it was Mayweather's ass being busted!! Hahahaha!!

  • floyd vs clottey 2 years ago

floyd would have finished clottey impresively? I doubt floyd would have taken the fight with clottey on the first place. Of course, floyd would think clottey, a big and true welterweight, would be tickled by his punches.

what ever moron..what's impressive with evading anyways???...

  • naktete 2 years ago

KFC will now be more cautious, even a tough defense, MP can dominate the fight.... KFC will be more than just a turtle come fight night w/ MP.

  • Diego 2 years ago

Can't wait to see How will floyd fared against Shane..

  • lex 2 years ago

To #1 floydfan: you are definitely one stupid moron. Floyd could never dispose clottey because lil jr does not have a punching power and clottey would not show respect against floyd as he showed against manny. He will surely try his best to hit floyd and may even hurt your lil jr.

  • naktete 2 years ago

MP is a member of a band ^_- doing the "pompyang" to Clottey.... hehehehe, i thought i saw an FPJ movie

  • mma critic 2 years ago

clottey was just outclassed by the Pacman. I'm sure Mosley will dominate Gayweather. All Gayweather fans you're up for a big big disappointment. Your hero is actually ZERO!

  • mma critic 2 years ago

When gayweather fights the Pacman I'm sure he is going to cover up like clottey but will apply his extra arsenal which is running. That would be fun to watch. Covering up and running at the same time. Gayweather would need steroids in order to have the stamina to run while covering up for 12 rounds! ha ha ha!

  • naktete 2 years ago

May 1, 2010 : all you KFC fans out there... you'll see your idol being the Clottey nyahahahaha !!!

  • naktete 2 years ago

Cotto fought MP better than Clottey
if Clottey is afraid.... what more is KFC ?????

What we have witnessed was just a preview of what could happen if the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight pushes through - BORING. If Clottey was seen to have always covered up for defense and refused to engaged, Mayweather would just backpedal with shoulder-roll to boot. PACQUIAO-MOSLEY WOULD BE A LOT MORE EXCITING TO WATCH.

  • naktete 2 years ago

the question now is, will KFC come out of his shell ?

  • Carpo 2 years ago

I'm Bored of clottey's defensive style he looks like an AI standing Punching bag of boxing. If ever floyd and many meet in the ring and floyd do his defensive style with the pacman then he has no chance of winning, he may also be like an updated smart standing punching bag once again of the pacman. Hail the king manny you prove it again to all fight fans that you are the best.

  • bolo punch 2 years ago

the irony of this fight was that clottey didn't come to win but to showcase his defense. defense doesn't win fights, offense does. with the way clottey fought, it was clear he didn't belong in the same ring as pacquiao. if it weren't for his size and weight advantage, pacquiao would have easily taken him out.

  • ampatuan army 2 years ago

If it looks like boring watching clottey just standing there defending all night.how much more disappointing if floyd fight manny using his bitch shoulder roll defense and at the same time back pedaling the whole night???At least clottey stand in front of pacman. That is why pacman/floyd will just be much boring fight than pac/clottey.Pacman better fight mosley, bradley, marquez.

Pacman vs gayweather is what we want if KFC survived Sugar Shane which I doubt. If KFC insist on that stupid drug test, I would advise Pacman to agree on the 14 days cut off before the fight provided that the fight shall be held at the Dallas Cowboys' Stadium. In Texas, the knumbing drug that mayweather uses is prohibited, so let's see a real level playing field. Cleaning the sport my foot. I bet gayweather will do the real chicken dance. I hope Sugar beats him silly so we can have a good last fight from the Great Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

  • Carpo 2 years ago

I really do hope shane beat KFC I don't want to see this defensive style boxers again fighting pacquiao it made me very sleepy. I now want Mosley vs Pacquiao this is more interesting than KFC vs Pacman. Shane please KO this chicken floyd for us fight fans and give a good fight with pacquiao we don't want to see this boring fight again on pacquiao's next fight.

  • Antonio M 2 years ago

Like I said before, mayweather will keep his precious "zero". After May 1st. and the rematch (clause), it's going to be Mosley 2 - mayweather 0.

    bravo!

  • chas/tex 2 years ago

Let,s not have a shoulder rolling, running, tonque sticking out fight with Mayweather. I think that we are tired of that kind of fight. Go manny
