Pacquiao fight delaying changes to Philippine Constitution

A new Obama Administration in Washington has caused media scrutiny on the actions of the President for the first 100 days since taking office.  There are various issues that require action such as the war on terror, the global recession, swine flu epidemic, unemployment, and a host of other important areas.

Yes, that is U.S. politics.  And America - Las Vegas, Nevada to be exact - is the site of "The Battle of East and West" between British Ricky Hatton and Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

Some lawmakers in the Philippines are dismayed that the upcoming Manny Pacquiao fight is causing congressional hearing delays on proposed changes to the Philippine Constitution.  Elected and appointed officials, both from the Philippine Congress as well as the Executive branch, will be in Las Vegas to watch Manny fight, and undoubtedly cheer with the familiar words "Mabuhay ka Manny!"

The Philippine Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles will be in Vegas.  If he is there, we can bet the Philippine Constitution will be as is for now.

How might Americans react if President Obama delayed transferring troops from Iraq to Afghanistan so that he can watch Bernard Hopkins take on Felix Trinidad at the MGM Grand?  Or if Nancy Pelosi waited until the following week to sign off on passing the $700 economic stimulus bill, in order to be at ringside for Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez at Planet Hollywood?

Sure, such scenarios escape understanding and baffle the minds of most Americans.  Then again, most Americans do not comprehend how big and transcendent Manny Pacquiao is in the Philippines.

The dangerously raucous crowd setting in Vegas on May 2nd will help to diminish that existing knowledge gap . . .
