Pacquiao and Mayweather: differences in greatness (part II)

. . . continued from Part 1

Floyd "Money" Mayweather, Jr. and God-fearing Manny Pacquiao are symbols of the yin and yang of duality.  In an ancient Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia, deep inside a pitch black, dark cavern-like structure, lies a revered golden statue.  Worshipped by the ancients, there are two faces on one body, both conjoined, but facing away from each other.  They are joined by the oneness of eternity.  Timelessness.  Of the undefinable infinite.

If these two are to have a clash of arms, with the stars aligning, then you have an unfolding biblical morality tale.

Beyond fighting skills and boxing talents inside the ring, fight fans can undergo their own reflections as to who they think they are as people - how they identify themselves, by questioning who they root for, or why they root for either "Money" or Manny.  Who you worship moves you closer to who you become.  That is the translation of how a hero becomes one with his society, and makes it evolve - progress, or regress.

Agricultural Man and the Hunter

In people's social awareness, Pacquiao goes beyond a cheap fast-food idolatry of simple sports icon.  He represents the tradition of man's agricultural roots, with associated behaviors and values evolved from thousands of years; born of the earth soil, planting seeds, resurrection of dead crops - all of which shaped his perceptions, rituals, and ultimately, religion.  How and what he worships, and his ideation of the skies and perceptual external universe, are determined by his ways of living.

- Agricultural or Hunter tradition -

Values for survival in the farm include integrity, getting along with fellow villagers, the eternal cycle of planting and harvesting, forgiveness, sacrifice, family, and resurrection.  Values of the Judeo-Christian.  The Catholic.

Manny Pacquiao was born in the settings of the twenty-first century.  But his challenges, and the challenges of human beings, share a common heritage rooted in the past:  That material abundance is accompanied by spiritual dangers.  And that dire poverty brings with it physical harm.

The Filipino conquered extreme poverty early in life, and with material abundance, must now decide whether or not he will be tempted in the spiritual domain.  His counterpart, has a role in reverse.  The American is flush with spiritual dangers, and choices have brought him to the brink of financial necessities and irresponsibilities if not contained can be another sad tale of a boxer gone street hapless broke.

In Tim 6:6-10:

There is great gain in godliness and contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world; but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs.

Money and The Golden Calf

In the hunting society tradition, you rove, search and destroy, and kill your prey.  You fend off competing hunter-tribes, kill them and don their scalp as natural medals.  The roving hunters on horses seek food elsewhere, they are warrior-like.  Not the crops, but weaponry and skill are keys to survival.  It is the ultimate dog-eat-dog Darwinian structure.  In a warlike setting, it is imperative to accumulate your resources; save up for winter and famine times.  And in winning the warfare game against animals and enemy tribes, deception is rule number one.  Blend with the grass.  Color your face, wear masks.  Be discreet, then plunder with the savagery of a brute crocodile.  Attack with surprise at night.  Kill with no mercy, and ensure that your enemy is crushed to prevent vengeance and retaliation.  Forgiveness is weakness.  Gentleness is weakness.  Only strength matters - solo flight if need be.  The rituals evolve into ceremonies, and these into religious devotion.  Of Gods with lightning, pitch forks, and boiling temperament.  The red warlike god Mars is worshipped.

In that hunting tradition, resource accumulation becomes the single defining obsession.  The life purpose in a maddening existence.  Like Manny, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is also born into the twenty-first century setting.  An epoch in which money is that unifying obsession.  Gone is the motherly, agricultural-based God.  The spiritial essence and the wisdom of nature is entirely replaced with materialism and The Golden Calf.

Mirrors and Reflection

Shane Mosley climbed the ring Saturday evening, he disrespected Floyd in view of millions.  Floyd's ego will not stand for disrespect.  Yet the world is mirroring his treatment of others.  Mayweather's tirade in the build-up to the Oscar de la Hoya fight in 2007 was some of the worst treatment to another human being in modern boxing history, a time when Floyd went so far as to bring a chicken to a pre-fight conference to insult and rattle his opponent, among numerous vulgarities.  The world gives you disrespect, when that is what you give.  When you squeeze an orange, only orange juice can come out.  Apple juice cannot come out when you squeeze an orange.

Floyd's technical prowess is superior to any active boxer.  Perhaps only Paul Williams can defeat him - theoretically, as that fight will likely never be made.  And if he so chooses to face his ultimate test - the three-headed, fire-breathing dragon - Mayweather can ultimately defeat all of Pacquiao, Mosley, and Miguel Cotto.

For purposes of the sport and legend inside the ring, that would square up the debates.

For purposes of society and symbolism in a global world struggling to identify what it stands for, and what it would like to become, it matters not that Floyd may ultimately conquer (hunt) these challengers.  What matters is who people root for.  And in their rooting, move our world closer to its identity-fate - in writing its future histories on the tablets of judgment.

In Prov 11:4,28:  Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

Defining greatness is man's most important task because he structures his way of life, values, and priorities based on that definition.  His village meets a fate commensurate with the quality of that defining.  And Manny Pacquiao evokes a kind of greatness unmatched by Floyd.

And "Money" Mayweather evokes a definition of success most imperative and practical in today's commercial world.  Unfortunately, for all of us, it is already becoming a hyper-commercial village.  The hunter who worships The Golden Calf has bled and killed the farmer and his agricultural God.  If possible for one defining night, the Man of Farm - the symbolism that is Pacquiao - can defend his village's way of life, against an invading rove of hunters - a masked tribe looking to kill him, destroy his sacred honor, and his (allegedly) inferior God.

Reflecting an inverse symmetry and anti-correlation - one a sacrilege to the other:  Pacquiao vs. Mayweather is sport's biggest event of this century, and of our times.  Because the way spectators root and worship shape the values of our world.  It is a match that guides us in how we define our own greatness and our own aspirations.  Both men have dedicated their lives to a perfection of competing causes.  And whether they chose to or not, the fate of heavens are mandating that they give modern humanity the right, contemporary moral answers.  Inside the ring, both men will figure it out, and the referee holds the eternal scales in the balance.

- Will vs. Skill -

Pacquiao vs. Mayweather is an unfolding biblical morality tale, of the new kind.  In both men's presence we are invoked of the time, when in our era, the Man of The Golden Calf can, and may, reconfigure each of our own personal religions.

In the Agricultural vs. Hunter tradition, we conclude with Chief Seattle's letter to the American President on December 1854.

The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?

Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.

We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to the same family.

The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father.

The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother.

If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.

Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.

One thing I would like to say, was that, Mayweather stole the belt of Jose Luis castillo. If you will review the fight, you can see, that he was demolish by the hands of castillo. And you can see right there, how Castillo was robbed. Try to wath it again, and you will an entertaining castillo against an ever running Mayweather.

    Random Rant-

Sorry to say this but the truth is ugly. HISTORY IS WRITTEN BY THE WINNERS NOT THE LOSERS. Everything you learn in school is not necessarily the truth or created by Bravemen and "God fearing men". This world with all its beauty is still a world of sin and hate. Just because people have an overwhelming feeling that one person deserves something over another does not make it so. So many unspoken heroes or "legends" all over the world are not known. Life and reality has proven that strongest, most cunning and ruthless of people are the ones that rule and dictate the world and socieity at large. Mayweather the character in boxing is a Microcosm of the Corporate Ideal. Self preservation by any and all means necessary. Manny is great man indeed but still a man and is presented with the same temptations we all face but even more now that he is worshipped by fanatics. Theres a bit of Mayweather in Manny and vice a versa. Its not as simple as good and evil.

I agree with the orangutang looks. And if you look closer, all the Mayweathers actually have strong, very very strong resemblace to primates. I just heard someone say both in looks and in behaviour.

Mayweather, the fraud, the cheat, the big mouth, the arrogant and soon to be bankrupt" filthy rich ", will never attain greatness in boxing. Why ? he is a coward, boring, bicycle man !!!!!!!

Mayweather is a wise cheater and Marquez plays along as a fool.
If Pacquiao plays along to be fooled by Mayweather then he will also loose.
Hype Mayweather is not a fighter but a greedy business man.
He's not great but a greedy record holder.
Doesn't take risk, always in advantage and do you believe the rib injury issue?

pacman could have dispose marquez within 3 rounds if he was the size of floyd jr,better than him probably.what i'm saying is mayweather is just pure boring, with all the defensive prowess he have.he couldn't finish off jmm.the only advantage that mayweather has against pacquiao is his height and reach,in terms of speed and power their quite even.but floyd jr could steal run away with a win on pacman.he's still got one last ace in his sleeves, that is CHEAT!GO CHEAT ON GREAT LITTLE MEN FLOYD.

gaycheater should not on no.2 slot in the Ring.
he dont deserved to be no 2 as he fight the kindergarden kid, he looks heavy wt fignting with flywt. during the fight.

gaycheater making the boxing fans fool.

  • Debonaire from the Castro District 2 years ago

Mayweather was great in ducking Cotto when he was in his prime and knocking out everyone (before Margarito). Jacko Jr. was great in beating up a Super Featherweight in Marquez and now wants to fight Marquez's ex wife. Gayweather has a terrific role model in Fraud Sr. who happens to be crackhead jail bird.

  • sec 2 years ago

What about fighting Paul Williams or Mosley? With them theres no catchweight and definitely you wont have pay six figure fine. But I doubt that fight will happen. In Marquez, you chose to weigh 146 instead of 144 ( agreed weight ) never mind the fine of 600T as long as you have all the advantage. It cant be denied that you are a great fighter but at the same time afraid to take an even fight. You are a coward who talks too much. Now I know why a certain writer days ago wrote that you are the kind of person which only your own mother will like or love.

  • floydfan 2 years ago

This 2 Alien Guys father & son are LUCIFER's man while Pacquiao is GOD almighty's choice. To probe this LUCIFER's Guys? THe SON is always thinking of MONEY while frauding! The Father is always talking nonsense trash. They always wnated a bad while Pacquiao is very humble as what GOD's wanted. He will always elivate it. Now therefore i can say! THE GOOD (pacquiao) The BAD (mayweather Jr.) & The UGLY (Mayweather Sr.)

Pacquiao vs mayweather therefore (GOOD vs EVIL) of course we christians do not wanted that evil will rule. LUCIFER sending this 2 father & son here on earth to distroy anything for the money.

  • Shooter 2 years ago

Floyd is dammed cheater! he has already the advantage plus & extra 2 lbs. weight. His win has no honor because he is just taking advantages. He is not a fair figther i don't impress nor believed in him. His record of no losses is not the bottom line infact those guys are just trycicle drivers excluding old ODLH, & Hatton which he won only after 11th round. Unless he fought Cotto,Mosley,Margarito then his tittle before retiring is worthy.

He is a true coward he bacame undefeated due to selecting small guys. He is a GAY FRAUD BALUGA! like his UGLY ALIEN drug addict father.

  • Shooter 2 years ago

emagine? how coward? after the 2 rounds win by TKO of PACMAN over Hatton, he sign up against small Marquez? How COWARD BALUGA FRAUD.

He is not worthy to become a P4P king he is very selective against small man. I think his next fight will not against Mosley but against Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico. That's his wish & wanted.

Mayweather in not good to be P4P king but Kg per Kg while PACMAN is TON by TON. figthing bigger opponents.

  • SHOOTER 2 years ago

Hey you! SNIPER & FLOYDFAN? why are you fighting? are you both FILIPINOs?

You floyd fan? how much your money bet against Pacquaio?
I will put my bet to Manny against Cotto 8 rounds TKO.

  • floydfan 2 years ago

Im going with Pacquiao too because I want Mayweather to be the one to beat him not Cotto...And than Sniper can hate Mayweather some more.

  • Vince 2 years ago

floydfan, you are so gullible, there's a reason why these figures are called RUMOURS. I'm sure Iole, the guy who started it is a BIG PBF nut-hugger, possibly like yourself. Anyway, since UFC does not have to announce its buys, we might not ever find out the real buys for UFC 103. But I wanna see that PBF/Marquez has done exactly. I wouldn't doubt it did 1 mill, since 90% of that would be Mexicans. Floyd does tend to operate on a risk-to-reward system; big reward for less risk. Hope he fights Mosely for a REAL welterweight fight.

  • floydfan 2 years ago

Ill let you in on my secret...I started out ass a Pacquiao fan but always wanted Pacquiao to fight Mayweather...So I changed my name to floydfan and got all the Pacnuthuggers to hate him so they would eventualy meet...Cause I heard a rumur that Pacquiao fights for the people..So what better way to make the fight happen than to make Pacquiaos people hate Mayweather...I almost succeded until Mayweather injured his rib carterlage..Which delayed the JMM/PBF belt to Sep19...Now Pacquiaos fighting Cotto...Nooooooooo

  • floydfan 2 years ago

Current P4P king vs former P4P king thats what im talking about.

  • floydfan 2 years ago

It's just a simple analogy way back when Ali was beaten by Frazier. Frazier was badly beaten by Foreman. However, Foreman was dominated by Ali, which catapulted him to Greatness. Manny will do the same to Money ... Dominate him badly, and will contemplate his second retirement.

  • mexican 2 years ago

    debonaire...you are a d i c k s u c k e r hell...i still see your comments here..did you look on the mirror as your mom told you? maybe not yet...you are not human f-cker..get back to your world of apes..eat banana as you eat your own d i c k....

  • Pacmanfan 2 years ago

Win or lose... I'll pick Pacman. He's a good example of self-discipline inside and outside the ring. By the way, nice article, Marv. Quite different... spiritual approach.

  • Pacmanfan 2 years ago

There is nothing permanent on earth. Someday Pacman's and Floyd Jr.' time and popularity will end just like every former all-time-greats were (like Ali, Leonard, Duran, etc). What will remain is the legacy and that's what makes Pacman excel over Mayweather
