Packs of feral Chihuahuas terrorize Arizona town: Animal control overwhelmed

Dealing with a singular snapping and yapping Chihuahua is enough to grate even the hardiest of dog lover's nerves, but when the one is multiplied by up to a dozen per pack, that's when the local Animal Control officers get involved, as reported by the New York Daily News on Feb. 18, 2014, and ABC News on Feb. 17, 2014.

The Phoenix, Arizona suburb of Maryvale is being overrun by packs of wild, feral Chihuahuas that are posing more than one type of threat to the residents.

According to the Public Information Officer for Maricopa County Department of Animal Care and Control, Melissa Gable stated that the number of complaint calls from Maryvale has tripled from last year.

Animal Control cites that the pint-sized pooches are the most numerous breed at the County's Animal Shelter, but it seems obvious that more than a few former Chihuahua owners are simply abandoning their equally obviously fertile Toy dogs to the wilds of suburbia.

Reports have flooded County government with complains of the dogs attacking local children going to and from school, as well as when the youngsters are simply playing in their own front yards.

Then come the complaints of dog feces.

Lots and lots of Chihuahua feces. Seemingly everywhere, according to more than a few shoe-soiled Maryvalers.

Unfortunately, Maricopa County can't seem to control the problem.

According to Gable:

Part of it is these animals aren't spayed or neutered, so they're out looking for a mate and are having babies, which also contributes to the problem.

Gable also advised the citizenry that "if at all possible, if you see a stray, if you can safely contain him in your yard and then call us, that makes a big difference."

The sole pro-active move reported was that the Maricopa Animal Care and Control will spay and neuter dogs at no charge, as well as planning on visiting Maryvale "in the summer to provide the service for residents."
