Packers likely to re-sign Shields; will mull over others

Reports today are surfacing on the future of Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields and it looks good for the young defensive back.

During the weekend, as rookies showed their skills, Shields' agent Drew Rosenhaus was in "face-to-face" discussions with the Packers.

Last season, Shields picked off four passes in 14 games. He was often lined up against opposing team's star wideouts.

In his four year career, Shields, 26, has 13 interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble.

Shields, an undrafted free agent, only earned about $2 million last season. Rosenhaus will likely demand a multi-year deal closer to $6 million a year.

Besides Shields, the Packers must decide on linemen B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett and the coach wants them both back, if he can get them at an affordable price.

It would make more sense to let Pickett go. He's 34 and doesn't have much left in his tank. He's a serviceable, but not highly desired lineman.

Raji, still only 27, made the mistake of turning down a 2013 offer from the Packers that averaged about $8 million a year. The Packers have since taken that offer off the table.

With Raji's disappointing 2013 season, the Packers can afford to let him go, but they have plenty of cap room to re-sign him. It's up to general manager Ted Thompson and the front office.

Finally, on offense, the Packers must decide on receiver James Jones. Jones, who led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 2012 with 14, only had 3 last season. He is entering his second chance at free agency.

There's no guarantee that Jarrett Boykin, set to enter his third NFL season, can continue his 2013 success (13.9 yards per catch).

So, the Packers have some choices to make. Signing Shields is at the top of the list.
