Pack less without sacrificing style

It seems as though Minnesota has been in the throws of winter for ages.  If you are one of the lucky ones that will be making a Spring Break escape, but don't feel like handing an extra $15-30 per flight to the airlines for your luggage, you can still have a fashionable trip with only a carry-on in tow.  Plus, if you only pack a carry-on, there is no risk that the airline will send your clothing to Michigan when you're headed to Mexico.

Pick a hue
Choose a color-family for the week (and if you're going somewhere warm, anything but black).  If you pack a few items in the same color scheme, you can easily mix and match to make a variety of outfits.  If you're going somewhere where the days are hot, but the nights are cool; pack a cardigan that can be dressed up or down in a neutral color.

Show some leg
Forget your heavy denim at home.  This season skirts and shorts in light, airy fabrics are hot, and, luckily, they wont take up too much space in a carry-on.  Don't forget to throw in a cute sundress (or two!).  This space-saving wonder will go from day to night with a simple change of shoe.

Let your accessories do the talking

A simple white tee and skirt might feel boring enough to put you to sleep, but with the right accessories you may be the talk of the town!  Pack a selection of costume jewelry (vacation is not the time to break-out Grandma's heirloom pieces); bangles, earrings, cocktail rings, and statement necklaces in bold colors and fun shapes.  They will take up virtually no space, and they will add all the flair you need.  On chilly nights, a great light-weight scarf can step in for a shawl to keep you warm.

Walk this way
Don't feel like you need to bring every pair of shoes you own, a couple will suffice.  First, be sure to throw in a pair of flip-flops; even if you're not headed to the beach, you don't want to be stuck barefoot around the hotel pool.  Next, pack a cute and comfortable pair of heels that are dressy enough for nights on the town.  Try a pair of metallic pumps which are neutral, without being boring, and can be worn with just about anything.

Wear it
As tempting as it is to throw on your comfiest sweats for travel, resist the urge.  Think of your travel outfit as a way to get a few extra items along for the trip.  Wear a pair of flat-soled shoes that you will be comfortable wearing often on the trip,  which are easy to remove while going through airport security.  Sport a nice tee or cami under a soft cardigan that will keep you warm until you land, which can be easily removed if your destination is warmer than home.  This is also the way to sneak in your favorite pair of jeans, without having to struggle to get them in your suitcase.

Be realistic

Even if your resort has an amazing workout center, are you really going to use it?  If the answer is no, then leave the running shoes at home.  Don't pack items that are just going to take up valuable space in your luggage.

Bon voyage!
