Fans of the massive blockbuster, Pacific Rim, are going to be very happy with today. Earlier this month, it was announced that director Guillermo Del Toro is working on a sequel to the film and Zak Penn would help Del Toro write the film. This confirmed that a sequel was in the works, but fans were unclear about the movie would get greenlit. Now fans can mark their calenders because Pacific Rim 2 has a release date.

Thanks to announcement from Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures last night, Pacific Rim 2 will be hitting theaters in the spring of 2017. While the announcement of the continuation of Pacific Rim was good to hear, what could only sweeten the anticipation for this film was some words from the director himself. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Gullermo Del Toro talk about what fans could expect in the next film and how the first film was just the beginning.

"The characters I love will return," del Toro told BuzzFeed in a statement. "Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast."

So not only is Del Toro promising bigger and better things for Pacific Rim but he is confirming that characters from the first film will be returning in this upcoming sequel. This will likely mean that many of the stars will be coming back to reprise their roles. However what Guillermo Del Toro has planned for a continuation remains to be seen However, if anyone can pull this off, it is Guillermo Del Toro.
