Pac-Man joins the 'Smash Bros.' roster

Nintendo has placed a lot of their focus on the upcoming Wii U and 3DS installments of Super Smash Brothers during this year's E3, with yesterday's show featuring reveals for Mii Fighters and Palutena, as well as the series' first invitational tournament. Masahiro Sakurai, the game's director, held a developer roundtable last night, where he revealed that Pac-Man, another classic gaming mascot, will be joining the battle. Nintendo of America live tweeted the news from the event.

Pac-Man's reveal trailer illustrates on how incredible it is that mascots from Nintendo, Sega, Capcom and Namco will be playable in one title. It also showcases a few of Pac-Man's moves, which will have him changing into his retro “pizza” form from time to time. Elements from Pac-Land, such as the fire hydrant he uses as a weapon, as well as his Wii U stage, will also make an appearance. One of Pac-Man's smash attacks also has him pulling out two of the original game's ghosts (the trailer shows Pinky and Clyde), to knock away opponents on either side of him.

The “Red, Blue and Yellow” trailer also teases the return of Mr. Game & Watch, though the Smash Bros. website hasn't been updated to include him. This makes it seem as though Nintendo isn't counting this as an official reveal. With that said, we'd be surprised if Nintendo decided not to include such a historical character who has appeared in the series since Melee.

Some fans may not be completely surprised by Pac-Man's reveal, as his place in the roster has been rumored for quite some time. There's also the fact that Namco is involved with the game's development, so the inclusion of some of their intellectual properties was inevitable. Super Smash Brothers for 3DS will launch on October 3rd, 2014, while the Wii U version is set to release sometime during the holiday season.
