Since July 1, Act 62 has been in effect in the state of Pennsylvania, mandating up to $36,000 a year in coverage from health insurance plans for the treatment of children under age 21 with diagnoses on the autism spectrum. For qualifying families necessary coverage beyond that amount is covered by Medical Assistance (MA).
The effects of the act are now noticeable on benefit coverage forms that come in the mail from insurance companies. Local assistance agencies also state that when in doubt, if something on a statement is not covered, check with MA to see if it's covered through your MA provider.
The PA Department of Public Welfare has an excellent Q&A page about Act 62 and what is and is not covered.
