Tony Horton shares fitness and success secrets in new book 'The Big Picture'

Tony Horton is an internationally recognized fitness expert who has helped millions of people lose weight with his best-selling P90X fitness program, but now he's branching out to help you realize your potential and live life to the fullest.

In an exclusive interview, Tony discussed how he overcame childhood bullying, a speech impediment, and financial problems to become one of the most influential fitness icons in the world.

Horton shared his incredible story in his new book, The Big Picture: 11 Laws That Will Change Your Life, which he says can help you get in great shape, enjoy more fulfilling relationships, be happier, and achieve your most pressing goals.

Horton said you cannot separate your physical health from your mental, financial, relationship and emotional health. What's more, you can't truly be happy or thrive if you're not healthy physically.

The key to becoming physically fit, successful and happy begins first in the mind, said Tony. But becoming mentally fit begins with a healthy diet and physical movement. Not surprisingly, eating well and exercising daily are top priorities.

"I eat vegan, vegetarian, Paleo and flexatarian meals; all healthy, but with more options," said Horton. "The only constant is that I still stay away from shellfish and cow. And as always, I avoid fast food and processed food filled with sugar, salt, and chemicals."

Tony's workout plan is outlined below:

  • 6:00 pm on Monday night I do plyometrics.
  • 7:30 am Tuesday morning is shoulders and arms.
  • Wednesday night I have two different cardio options.
  • 7:30 am Thursday morning is chest and back.
  • Friday afternoon is a routine called "Boxes and Balls,” which a focus on core and plyo boxes.
  • Saturday is yoga.
  • Sunday I either do a track workout, or gymnastics.

Horton, who's ripped to sheds and boyishly handsome at 55, said exercise gives you the energy and motivation to clear every hurdle in life.

People who exercise don’t just have fit bodies. They have fit brains. Exercise makes you happier by increasing the feel-good hormones norepinephrine and serotonin in your brain. It also boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which improves learning and memory by building stronger connection between neurons. In other words, exercise doesn’t just make you happy; it makes you smart."

Horton detailed his 11 laws that will change your life, and said these steps will expand your life in ways you cannot even imagine:

  1. Do your best, forget the rest.
  2. Mix it up.
  3. Be consistent.
  4. Stay intense.
  5. Define your purpose.
  6. Make time for play.
  7. Have a plan.
  8. Stress less, sleep more.
  9. Be flexible.
  10. Recovery is an art form.
  11. Maintain balance.

"The fountain of youth is in this book," said Horton. "But you have to be willing to work hard, be disciplined, and get comfortable with being uncomfortable. But the rewards are through the roof."

Tony believes the true purpose of his life is to help others find their purpose. Horton said contributing to others is what has enabled him to live a fulfilling life.

Tony has visited over 50 military bases domestically and internationally to pay homage to our brave men and women in the armed forces. The true secret to success, said Horton, is through contribution.

Wealth and fame are totally lame. To believe that those things are important is a complete waste of time and often the downfall of anybody that thinks otherwise. My goal is, and has always been, to focus on helping as many people as possible with real and authentic techniques that will change their lives."

Horton is grateful and humbled by the success he has had, and said there's no reason why anyone should settle for a mediocre body, career or life. He was able to achieve his dreams and become healthy and happy by following his 11 laws, and so can you.
