San Jose – Opera San José continues its 29th season and presents, “II trovatore” set in 15th Century Spain, with English supertitles performances are scheduled through Feb. 24 at the historic California Theatre located at 345 South First Street in downtown San Jose. Composer Giuseppe Verdi’s classic has it all: Personal vendetta, a doomed love triangle, and one gypsy’s lifelong obsession for revenge that creates a compelling and dramatic love story folks won’t want to miss. Everything you want in an opera: Vengeance, war, jealousy and passion – with an emotional heart-stopping score (just in time for Valentine’s Day).
Based on the play “El Trovador” (Te Troubadour) by Spanish playwright Antonio Garcia, this incredibly powerful opera score features breathtakingly beautiful arias and one of the most famous melodies ever written, the “Anvil Chorus.” This amazing opera was first performed in Rome in 1853 and with a total of 190 performances in the first three years, today it’s known as a staple in operatic repertoire worldwide. From Opera San Jose’s founding music director David Rohrbaugh (amazing, conducting more than 60 productions and more than 600 performances with Opera San Jose including company premieres such as “La rondine” “Falstaff” and “Werther”) – he also taught for 30 years at San Jose State University and co-directed the Opera Workshop with Opera San Jose General Manager Director, Irene Dalis. “II trovatore” also is with international stage direction by Brad Dalton (so very talented and amazing from credits such as “Faust” to “Anna Karenina” to “Madama Butterfly”) conducting in the United States and abroad. The Feb. 17 & 19 performances will be conducted by Andrew Whitfield, resident chorus master for Opera San Jose (also incredible, serving as assistant conductor for Opera San Jose for many performances including “The Pearl Fishers” and “Faust”). San Jose – The Stage presents, “Red” winner of six 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Play, by John Logan (directed by Kenneth Kelleher) takes you into mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko; an up and close – and very personal portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability; this is a startling snapshot of a brilliant artist at the height of his fame. Coming in April: “The Threepenny Opera” (Die Dreigroschenoper) by Kurt Weill, composed by Bertolt Brecht and directed by Kenneth Kelleher with 20th Century musical theater rolling on unstoppably into the 21st with an absolute relevance in today’s world. Old-fashioned opera and operetta forms, incorporating a sharp political perspective and the sound of 1920s Berlin dance bands and cabaret. A musical-saga that is not only revolutionary but inspiring and extremely creative – a must-see as well (April 3 through April 12, 2013; 2 hours 45 minutes).

Anywhere – Art-o-mat – Truly fine art for an affordable price for collectors; smaller versions of the original artwork that artists create available in incredible, vintage cigarette machines renovated into art vending machines that are also pieces of art. For just $5 people can own a piece of fine art and add to their collections; children can learn about fine art – there are simply no limitations when it comes to art.
San Jose – The San Jose Museum of Art is but another great place to hang and also a great place for the every third Thursday San Jose Made (SJMADE) and GoGo Craft (for just $5 after 5 p.m.) where a platform for local San Jose makers, labels, brands, small businesses and artists can showcase and sell current projects and goods. For one night only, SJMADE will gather a small group of independent makers in SJMA’s lobby for our SJMADE Mini Mart where folks can peruse the wares and then create a unique up-cycled cup cozy or t-shirt bracelet with the help of GoGo Craft, a mobile crafting workshop that provides exciting and accessible make-and-take projects for participants an all skill levels. Santa Clara – The Santa Clara Players presents “Harvey” February 17 through March 16, 2013 at the Triton Museum Hall Pavilion. The play surrounds wonderful and witty Elwood P. Dowd who has an imaginary friend – a six-foot imaginary “rabbit” who also happens to become the reason David is committed by his sister, although who, come to find out also starts to see for herself this “imaginary friend.” Oh my, only she starts to look like the “loony” tunes one do things start to make sense, or more crazy. And oh my how the story unfolds with all sorts of humor laced with mystery, intrigue and the never ending imaginations that run as wild as Harvey, the rabbit – at least until the truth comes out. This is one play you won’t want to miss – if you can handle it. Shows are March 22 and March 24; March 7 through March 10; and March 14 through March 16. –Have you seen Justin Timberlake’s new release, “Suit & Tie” (set to outsell Sexyback)?
–Another great one by Bruno Mars “When I was Your Man” – it is a great song for that lost love of yours that got away… (guys, pay attention to the song – it’s NEVER too late to say you’re sorry or try to make things right); and of course, “Locked Out of Heaven” – another great one.
–Christina Perry “A Thousand Years” – from the movie, Twilight – their latest, where Edward "gets the girl." And, well, where us women realize that the one we love is worth fighting for, (as long as he fights back, that is). An absolutely great song; among the best – so do give it a listen.

Fremont – Filoli Gardens is open again with the spectacular “Daffodil Day Dreams” beginning February 22 (through Feb. 24, 2013) – this is one event you won’t want to miss with the beautiful daffodils in bloom – more than a million of them, what a sight to see and can you imagine the photo op? With talks, tours and demonstrations as Filoli members, visitors and staff watch the flowering of the daffodils – an amazing event that many are looking forward to. The perfect post-Valentine’s Day gift (give them a voucher for a visit on Valentine’s Day, and then accompany them on Feb. 22, 23 or 24 for the time of their life). What a treat.
A few other events of interest might be on Wednesday, February 27 “Afternoon Tea” fundraiser event continues every fourth Wednesday of the month – see the site for further details. And also on Saturday, April 6, 2013 is “Spring Fling” with live music – bring the entire family for live entertainment Also, on May 9, 10 through May 12, 2013 is the “Filoli Flower Show” – with so many other events coming so stay tuned for additional events highlighted and more details to follow in P.K.’s articles. Filoli is located just 30 miles south of San Francisco and is one of the most loveliest gardens in the Bay Area, reminiscent of Disneyland for all its glory and splendor – a garden of delight you won’t want to miss; plan for an entire day to ensure a proper visit for a tour of the gardens (in fact, you may want to visit several times to see everything).

Santa Clara – From March 1 through March 3, 2013 this amazing group of women will put on the show of a lifetime featuring “Showtime” – another incredible presentation by the Santa Clara Women's League featuring "Showtime" with the production of “Doomstown Fractured Fairy Tales or Once Upon a Time” with this year’s production better than ever. This year’s melodrama features talents like never before, with curtain for Friday and Saturday’s Showtime beginning at 7 p.m.; with Sunday’s matinee viewing at 2:30 p.m. – this is one annual event folks will not want to miss. Friday, March 15, 2013 – (event runs March 15 through March 24)
Santa Clara – The Roberta Jones Youth Theatre presents “The Music Man” from March 15 through March 24, 2013 at the Mission City Center for the Performing Arts located at 3250 Monroe Street in Santa Clara. Tickets: $8 to $5 – this fantastic play is one you won’t want to miss. The Roberta Jones Youth Group will have two other Disney productions later in the season: Winnie the Pooh (June); and The Little Mermaid (July). However, in March, the “The Music Man” (based on the book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey) will be on center stage with their fantastic crew (and they are extremely talented, trust me) – with this play about an affectionate tribute to “Small town U.S.A.” of a bygone era, Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River city, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for “Marian” the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall (and you know what they say about love – it is the cure for what ails you – just in time for a following of one of the most romantic day’s of the year). Performance dates: March 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 7 p.m.; March 17, 24 at 2 p.m.

Half Moon Bay – The 23rd Annual Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show in Half Moon Bay so don’t miss this spectacular showcase of motorized mechanical marvels from throughout the 20th and 21st Centuries with more than 2,000 ultra-cool antique, vintage, classic, custom and exotic displays for public viewing.
