The following is the complete list of recalled Iams Veterinary Dry and Eukanuba specialty dry dog and cat foods announced by Procter & Gamble (P&G) on July 30. According to news reports at www.nasdaq.com from Dow Jones online, the parent company of Iams/Eukanuba - P&G - now estimates that this recall could involve as many as 800,000 to 950,000 bags of these dog and cat food specialty formulations in every size from seven-ounce samples to 37.5 pound bags. Some varieties and sizes of these pet foods (those not marked with an asterisk in the list below) were sold in both the U.S. and Canada.

Veterinary formulas were typically sold at veterinary hospitals, and some may have required a prescription for purchase. The Eukanuba dry specialty formulations were sold online and in specialty pet retailers as recently as Friday, July 30. In Syracuse and central New York, some varieties were sold in Petco and Pet Supplies “Plus” stores. This recall includes all UPC codes and all “Best By” date stamps from 01Jul10 to 01Dec11.

According to P&G news releases, this expanded voluntary recall was prompted because these products were manufactured in the same plant as Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal Diet. On July 25, two lots of that veterinary-prescription formulation were recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. Since all of the newly recalled products were manufactured on the same equipment and in the same plant, they may also be contaminated with salmonella. P&G initiated the recall expansion out of “an abundance of caution,” according to its media release, and in an attempt to prevent infection/contamination risk to both people handling the food and pets who consume these diets.

No Iams/Eukanuba canned food, biscuits, treats or supplements are affected by this recall. At this time, no cases of salmonella have been recorded as a result of handling or feeding these products. However, to avoid any risk of contaminating themselves or infecting their pets with salmonellosis, consumers should not feed these products to their pets, or handle the food. Double-bag the product, and return it to the store where purchased.
