Sean “Diddy” Combs just announced plans to launch “Revolt” channel on Comcast for 2013. Comcast will be exploring new territory with independently owned channels for a new audience. In the words of P.Diddy, the channel will build itself from the ground up so artists can connect with their audience almost entirely plugged by social media.
National broadcasted television has been attempting to incorporate social media on air. The dynamics of social media are much different than the boob tube. For instance, iJustine, known for making original content like video blogs has a massive following yet she does not seem to need the coveted airtime to promote herself, she just attracts viewers from YouTube. In this way online media defragments its broadcasting with the website not really needing a channel, program, or schedule.
If channel “Revolt” is successful it could introduce many new artists; as a producer P.Diddy has that in mind. MTV used to be the number one way for artists to be exposed. Up-and-coming artists are using social media now as are their fans.
In related news, Comcast will be launching three other independent networks. Aspire, owned by “Magic” Johnson will launch in the summer. Other channels include El Rey and BabyFirst Americas.
