I was very pleased to read this news article about the student genealogy program in my current hometown of Hollister supported by a grant from the Ozarks Heritage Foundation. As a Springfield family history and genealogy researcher, I am always delighted to see programs that involve young people in the history of the family and the region in which they live.
The story reports that: "Students used online resources and interviews with grandparents to develop their family trees and learn about their history in the Ozarks." Foundation executive director, Douglass Pitts, added: "… it was not just an Ozarks history project, … it was a family history project…" He continued, "So many of the students said they never knew this or that about their families, or that they never really talked to their grandparents." Pitts also noted, "The students gave presentations of their findings and it was so fantastic the school added it as line item to its yearly budget."
Do you know of a kids or youth family history or genealogy program at another school or library in the Springfield, MO, region? I'd be pleased to write a story and share that story in the space, if you will contact me at my email address (click on my name, above), or via Facebook, or Google+.
