'Oz' bewitches weekend box office

Oz the Great and Powerfulcast a powerful spell over the weekend box office with the best opening of 2013, according to industry figures released Monday.

‘Oz’ earned $79.1 million, which is more than double the take of the second-best opener of the year, ‘Identity Thief.’

Fantasy adventure ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ dropped to No. 2 in its second weekend, earning $9.8 million.

‘Identity Thief’ continued its strong run, earning $6.3 million in its fifth weekend and finishing third. The R-rated comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman has earned more than $116 million since opening with $34.5 million Feb. 8.

Colin Farrell revenge crime drama ‘Dead Man Down’ opened at No. 4, earning $5.3 million.

Dwayne Johnson action thriller ‘Snitch’ slipped one spot to fifth, earning $5 million in its third weekend.
