The two owners of a yellow Labrador retriever shot and killed their own dog on Saturday afternoon in a Santee, Calif. residential neighborhood stating the dog had bitten two of their family members and had been acting aggressively for the last few weeks.
According to Channel10 News.com, a neighbor called 911 after hearing ten consecutive shots. Witnesses stated they heard someone yelling that a dog had bitten a child.
When the San Diego County Sheriff's Department arrived, the dog owners who are from Texas were detained and questioned and stated:
"It's my job as a citizen to be responsible for my pets. My pet was a jeopardy to everyone."
The San Diego County Department of Animal Services says it is legal for an owner to shoot their own dog if the animal is acting aggressively.
The UT San Diego.com identifies the man and woman who owned the dog as Marines. Neither person was charged, and Sheriff's Lt. David Schaller said even though the shooting took place in a residential neighborhood, deputies "cut him a break" because of "his basic ignorance of the law."
Neighbors are disturbed at the brutality of the situation.
