Owners leave dog at pound so they can go on vacation

Louie is Labrador mix. He is 5 years old and weighs almost 60 pounds. He is in great shape because he is used to running about three miles at a time with his human. But that came to an abrupt end this week because Louie no longer has a family.

He became an inconvenience. You see, Louie’s family is going on vacation and Louie cannot go along. They could not find a pet sitter so they sent Louie packing to the green bar motel for dogs where he misses his family a whole lot. Not only does he not get to go running, but he is confined in a cell in a facility where sickness and death are rampant.

Louie is one of the latest residents of the Apple Valley Animal Shelter, a shelter where most animals leave via a barrel, after being killed, en route to a rendering plant. Louie is hoping for a miracle. He wants a new family where he can go on runs, play with the kids and live out his years in comfort.

This handsome boy is crate trained and housebroken. He is an obedience training graduate and he likes to travel. He walks well with a halter or gentle leader. He is up to date on his vaccinations. He is neutered but is not microchipped.

Louie once had a good life. He grew up eating Iams from a raised feeder. He never had any food issues. He doesn’t understand what he did wrong to land in doggie jail.

He gets along with other dogs if properly introduced. He has never had contact with a cat so he is not sure if he likes them or not. He does like older children, especially for belly rubs and games of fetch.

If you are interested in Louie, contact the Apple Valley Animal Shelter at avasrescues@applevalley.org or 760.240.7000 x 7555. They are located at 22131 Powhatan Road in Apple Valley, California. Their adoption hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are closed Sunday, Monday and Holidays. Louie’s ID is 134846. His ALT ID number is 06-26-14 23.
