There doesn't seem to be any shortage of excuses why irresponsible owners surrender their dogs to animal shelters, however in the case of a five-year-old Shih Tzu named Beauty, being left at the Wakulla County Animal Control in Crawfordville, Florida was a stroke of good luck.
A volunteer from the shelter had been preparing to bathe three flea-ridden kittens in the evening earlier this week, when a man pulled up to the shelter's drop box to leave a tangled little canine mess. After five years, the owner told the volunteer he was giving the dog up because "she was not getting any attention and it wasn't fair for her."
Now for a moment, one might have felt a bit of empathy for the owner, but don't be too hasty making any judgments until you read the rest of the story. Beauty had never been house trained so obviously wasn't ever invited into the home to receive the much needed attention; Beauty had spent the five years of her life alone, tied by a rope in the backyard.
The details became even more upsetting when the owner stated he had considered abandoning Beauty in the forest and letting the tiny dog fend for herself, but had changed his mind.
As Beauty's old life walked away, and hopefully a new life begins, the sweet little dog happily followed the volunteer into the shelter. Beauty has since been groomed and is in need of a home.
