Own a Chi flat iron? Democrat Farouk Shami invented it and he's running for Texas Governor

The Texas Gubernatorial race is heating up, with Republican contesters Debra Medina, Governor Rick Perry, and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchineson all preparing for the upcoming KERA debate.

But what about the Democrats running for office?

Well, there's an interesting candidate on the scene. You may not have heard of Farouk Shami, but you have probably used his hair products and flat irons. He's a Democrat. He's a billionaire mogul. And he's campaigning for Governor of Texas.

To learn more about Farouk Shami I checked out his campaign website.  It didn't say much about where he was from, his religious beliefs, etc.  So I searched online and found several intriguing articles including an interesting Wikipedia entry:

Farouk Shami

 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Farouk Shami is a Palestinian-American businessman from Ramallah, West Bank, who now lives in Houston, Texas, where he runs a large hair-care and spa products company. Shami was raised as a devout Muslim but now considers himself a Quaker.

Shami has worked for decades in the field of hair-care product develoment, and attended cosmetology school in Arkansas. He is notable for having invented the first ammonia-free hair-color, after developing an allergy to the chemical that initially led doctors to encourage him to leave his profession.

His company, the Houston-based Farouk Systems, currently employs 2,000 Americans, and exports its line of hair and skin care products under the BioSilk, SunGlitz and Cationic Hydration Interlink (CHI) brands to over 50 countries worldwide.

On July 27, 2009 Farouk Systems announced they will be opening a new plant in Houston that will employ approximately 5,000 people.[1] They plan to market the products as made in the USA.

On Nov 19, 2009 Shami announced he is running for governor of Texas as a Democrat. [1] The Shami campaign has faced criticism for placing signs and placards in public areas such as bridges without permission.

Shami is a member of the board of the American Task Force on Palestine.

So what do you think? Wikepedia has been known to contain errors, and I am curious about Farouk Shami's conversion to the Quaker faith. One thing is for certain . . the race for Texas Governor is becoming more interesting candidate by candidate.

Religion is not a criterion for Governor of Texas; however credibility, consistence and honesty are. Farouk claimed to be Quaker, his family members (and former longtime mistress) say he is Muslim, and Farouk clarifies that he is Muslim Quaker (“Haven’t you heard that?”)

Having attended Quaker School does not make Farouk a Quaker – maybe that is all what was available at the time (or even today) for quality education in Ramallah.
    • Wikipedia: “The Friends School currently serves as the School for the best and the brightest. It is well known to educate the children of Palestinian elites.”
    • King of Jordan had sent a personal greetings to Farouk Shami (a Quaker?) at the company international conference 2006 (Amman, Jordan) and 2008 (Cancun, Mexico)
    • Farouk is a member of, frequent guest speaker to, and honored by many Muslim organizations

    Farouk Shami – Fact Check
From www.faroukforgovernor.com "and founded a multi-billion dollar company that has created thousands of jobs for Texans.”

Farouk claims to be a Billionaire; however he is NOT listed on Forbes List of Billionaires – with his ego, he definitely would make sure that he would be listed if he just could prove it.

According to his claims, Farouk Systems is a (multi)billion dollar company with thousands of employees – However, Farouk has always counted his revenues in the following manner: Not what he sold to the distributors (his revenue) - or what the distributors sold to the salons - but what economic activity the salons created by selling and using his products.

As to number of employees, Farouk has counted all the part-time educators (independent salon owners and hairdressers) who conduct training classes and work the beauty shows as his “employees”.

    Who is Farouk Shami?
Are his public statements factual or is it all Beauty Show hype?

Farouk in San Antonio (10/21/09): “I manage business in 106 countries, I have tens of thousands of employees, and we've brought billions of dollars to the state of Texas,” Shami said.

    Fact Check:
    • Farouk manufacturers the products and sells them to independent distributors (in US and overseas), who in return sell to the salons. He DOES NOT manage these companies. They are his CUSTOMERS.
