Overreactions needed in order to support gun control

Two Pentagon police officers were wounded yesterday when a man walked up to the entrance of the complex’s subway station, pulled a handgun out of his pocket, and began firing. Officers returned fire and killed the shooter. A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.

Immediately, those in favor of gun control seized upon it as a prime example of why guns should be banned.

A posting on one policical website stated, "this story clearly denies the logic behind, 'Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.'" Except, of course, that it doesn't. The gun did not drag itself to the Pentagon and open fire while lying on its side. It required a person to make the decision to attempt to kill.

The follow up logic to support that assertion was that, "the man obviously wouldn’t have the means or resources to harm these police officers without the use of firearms." Really? I guess he didn't hear about the Wahiawa, Hawaii desk sergeant who narrowly avoided being stabbed by a piece of Plexiglas a few days ago. Not surprising since Plexiglas stabbings rarely make national news. For a little more mainstream weapon, we can look at Tennessee where about a week ago a Memphis police officer was attacked and stabbed multiple times when a suspect pulled out a knife.

Guns aren't the only tool that can be used for evil. The New York Times would be well advised to keep that in mind when they make an effort to point out that the subway stop where the shooting took place is a "major transfer point for people taking buses to various points in Virginia" and that Virginia "has some of the most lax gun laws in the nation and has been pushing to expand gun rights." Of course, the insinuation there is that if it weren't for those pesky gun rights this would never have happened. No matter that a person intending to do harm can even more easily obtain a knife, club, car, piece of Plexiglas, cyanide laced calcium capsule, or any other potentially lethal object.

The tool used isn't the problem, it is the person behind it. We can't stop people from doing bad things and disarming the ones who don't isn't going to do anything but create more victims. Guns stopped the attacker at the Pentagon. Guns in the hands of private citizens exercising their rights stop millions of criminal attacks per year. Rarities like this senseless attack do not serve as proof gun control works no matter how much the anti-gun crowd try to spin them.

We have raised a generation or two of wimps....

Along with banning the tool he used, we should find out if he was registered as a Democrat or a Republican and ban them too. Then we need to find out what mode of transportation he used, and ban that too. Next we need to find out what manufacturer made his clothes and shoes, and ban that too. If we can ban ALL these things, then we will never have another incident like this happening again.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned that guns were also used to stop the carnage? What might have happened if this occured in a "gun free" zone where nobody was armed?

  • Dumb and White 2 years ago

Yeah, you're right, Dumb, er, Dan. Knives are just as deadly as guns. Why, heck, even a big rock can do some damage, can't it? Wonder how much carnage the Virginia Tech nutjob could have done if he'd just found a nice big bunch of rocks and thrown them at his victims, or run up to each one of them and individually stabbed them. I'm sure it would have been comparable to the damage he did with his guns, because they're all JUST TOOLS, right, Dumb, er, Dan?

Ok, here's something no one is talking about. The attacker went to Va. all the way from Ca. You all remember Ca., don't you? You know that place on the west coast that has the highest Brady Campaign rating as the most restrictive state in the nation as regards 2A rights. That place where if guys like Dumb and White were right, would have the lowest crime rate in the country, instead of being in the top five. Certainly they wouldn't be amenable to exporting violence, er, uh, if D and W and his ilk were right. I always am amazed at the number of people who will call a man with a gun to come save them, even though they, themselves, have refused the ability to save themselves, and try to force others into the same state of helplessness, at the point of men with guns, AGAIN.

Why if I am to be unarmed to please these cowards, would they tolerate those policemen being armed? Shouldn't they have been as helpless as everybody else. I mean, fair is fair, same laws for everybody, right?

  • straightarrow 2 years ago

Oh, yeah, I forgot, they need to call better men than themselves to come save their asses. I am one of those better men, though not a law enforcement officer, so lighten up and insist that I be armed also to come rescue your trembling hide.

I won't of course, but I have every bit as much duty to do so as any law enforcement officer. No less than four Supreme Court rulings have said just that very thing.

The crazies are out there. You can't stop them and it really doesn't matter what "tool" they use. Anthrax, knives, bombs, airplanes, or guns - it doesn't matter. They will find a way.
The rest of us sane people have a right to have the CHOICE to own weapons.

Me heap big man. Me no coward, me just have small brain and lack of ability to understand complex arguments. Me compensate with fists and guns. Me go rape something now.

  • straightarrow 2 years ago

You lose. You missed all the complexity you intimated, and further you couldn't address the issue, so you maligned the messenger. Admittedly the messenger said ugly things about you. But the things he (I, just in case this too complicated for you to follow) said did not malign you because they were true. Hell! You couldn't have lost any better if you had tried. You couldn't have shown the invalidity of your stance any better than your projection of your internlal view of life onto others. (look it up) You fail.

How's the disability check working out, Straight? How old are you, you decrepit pos? Do have a relative write and let us know when you kick it, you disgusting old fascist.
