Overnight fire at Winchester ammo plant under investigation

Early Sunday morning, fire broke out at the Olin Corporation's Winchester Ammunition plant in East Alton, Ill.

East Alton Fire Chief Randy Nelson told KMOX:

Units arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and fire to the structure, with a number of exposures."

Fire crews from East Alton, Olin Brass, Wood River, Alton, Bethalto, Roxana, Hartford and Godfrey departments, all responded to the two-alarm fire in the 600 block of Powder Mill Road.

The blaze was brought under control around 7 a.m.

Several propane tanks exploded and a maintenance building was destroyed.

There were no injuries reported.

The cause for the fire is still under investigation at this time.

Winchester produces and sells both rifle and handgun ammunition.
