On the eve of the 41st anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, pro-life activists and opponents of the holocaust of legalized abortion will take to the streets of Washington to March in protest and hope today that one day that decision will be overturned. With thousands present in the midst of a major snowstorm, Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston preached the homily at the annual vigil Mass for Life last night, calling the foul weather "perfect," telling the overflow crowd at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception that "it shows your resolve."

"We oppose abortion not because we are mean or old fashioned," Cardinal O'Malley preached, "but because we love people. And that is what we must show the world."

In a homily sent this morning because of his inability to attend due to the snowstorm, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia said that for many in our society, they "no longer celebrate abortion, they venerate it...,"saying "our opponents have written the pro-life movement off too many times to count, but we continue to disappoint them, because no one can change the truth about when life begins." In Chaput's absence, the morning Mass which closed the prayer vigil and inaugurated March Day itself was celebrated by the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano.
