Since the year 2012 has ended and the new year of 2013 has begun, some people have been looking back at the many kinds of storms that they went through last year and wondering how many storms that they will have to go through in the coming years.
Regardless of whether those storms are coming in the financial, moral, spiritual, or relationship areas of a person’s life, they can have a terrible effect on the personal structure or the house of a person’s life.
Just as people’s physical houses need to be made of good building material and well-anchored to a solid foundation in order to stand the problems of the physical weather storms; so also the house of a person’s life needs to be built with the good material of good principles that will guide them in their daily activities and well-anchored to a solid foundation of their inner-core beliefs that will hold their house together when the various storms are coming against it.
Having this kind of a strong personal house is what Jesus is teaching people in Matthew 7:24-24 when He says that the people who listen to what He is saying (as recorded in the Bible) and then build the house of their lives on the solid rock of His teachings and God’s principles of living “may be compared to a wise man who built his house upon the rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst upon that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.”
However, in contrast to them, there are some people who rebel against God’s principles for living and instead have their personal house built with a loosely-fitting combination of guiding principles based on the teachings of various philosophies, religions, the latest fad-teachings of their favorite celebrity, and how they feel each day.
While doing that may feel good and last during good times, yet since it built on a shaky foundation, it will be blown apart like a house of cards when the storms of financial, moral, or relationship problems crash against their house.
That scenario is what Jesus is talking about when He said that “everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand. And the rains descended and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and it fell, and great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:26-27)
Which of the above descriptions matches how the house of your life is handling the many storms of life that are coming against it?
If the house of your life was built on a shaky foundation or built with poor guiding principles and has been devastated by the storms of living in modern society, then you can have God start repairing it by first asking God to forgive you for breaking His laws and then asking Jesus Christ to become your personal savior and spiritually apply His sacrificial atonement on the cross to your life.
When you do that, God will forgive you for breaking His laws, make you His newly restored creation and part of His spiritual kingdom of light, and then God will send the Holy Spirit to live inside of you to give you the ability to live according to God’s principles found in the Bible.
As you daily study the Bible to learn God’s principles and talk to God in prayer, you can develop a close relationship with God that will help you develop a strong personal building that will get through the storms that you will go through in your journey of life.
