Lyle Overbay is heading to Fenway Park.
The former Nevada Wolf Pack baseball player has signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox and hopes to make the roster this spring as a backup first baseman behind Mike Napoli and David Ortiz.
Overbay, who played from 1996-99 with the Wolf Pack, will enter his 13th major league season in 2013. He is a lifetime .270 hitter in the major leagues with 133 home runs and 581 RBI. He has played 1,324 games and has 1,188 hits.
Overbay split last season between the Arizona Diamondback and Atlanta Braves. He hit .292 in 45 games with Arizona and .100 (2-for-20) with the Braves. He has also played with the Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers in his career.
Overbay is a .323 hitter in 43 games at Fenway Park in his career.
The left-handed hitting Overbay mainly played right field for the Wolf Pack and became one of the greatest players in school history. His .358 career batting average is seventh in school history.
The 36-year-old ranks in the Top Ten in most every offensive category in Wolf Pack history. His 243 runs are second, his 257 RBI are first, his 39 homers are fourth, his 110 walks are fifth, his 309 hits are second and his 62 doubles are third.
