Brief introduction to aldosterone
Fat tissue produces a lipid soluble factor that stimulates aldosterone production from the adrenal cortex, found in top of the kidneys. A thin layer covers the adrenal gland, where part of aldosterone is synthesized. Aldosterone key role is to regulate electrolyte like sodium, potassium, calcium and fluid balance. If aldosterone circulation is too high, it can increase tissue generation of oxygen free radicals and systemic inflammation; In turn, this contributes to impaired associated cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure. High sodium retention and heart failures are common. Higher salt intake may greatly accentuate disturbances in body functions. However higher intake of potassium may restrict them. Over 40% of African Americans are at greater dangers of heart disorders caused by high serum aldosterone.
