There are more "aviation nuts" around than you might think. Air shows such as the LA County Air Show at the Fox airport in Lancaster - just North of Los Angeles - attract big crowds. Over 40,000 just on the first day.
Heavy wind gusts up to 36 miles per hour did not discourage aviation enthusiasts from coming to the air show. The organizers were actually very nicely surprised about the unexpected response.
The reason for the big crowds were some of America's top aerial performers such as US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, CAF red til squadron, Northrop flying wing and many others.
Static displays of rare aircraft were also very admired. Among them the Proteus, the record-setting high altitude airplane, made by Scaled Composites in Mojave, CA.
