Mazda Motor Corp. just announced a recall of some 161,400 Mazda6 sedans across the country over faulty door latches. The Japanese automaker warned that Mazda6 sedan doors could open while the vehicle is in operation and increase the risk of injury.

The defective door screw issue was brought to the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), who in turn began delving into the numerous consumer complaints last May. Mazda contends that the recall is due to either improper tightening at the factory end or uneven door surfaces.

The recall involves door latching screws used in previous model year vehicles built from February 4, 2008 through August 24, 2012. According to the company, dealers will remedy the situation by either applying a thread-locking adhesive to the screws, tightening them properly, or replacing any missing ones.

Mazda states that Mazda6 owners would be contacted about the defective screws this fall and the fix would be free of charge. The company also claims that thus far, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the latch screw problem.

NHTSA states that the recall is set to begin on October 18 of this year. Owners with any questions should contact Mazda at 800- 222-5500 and provide them with the recall number 70131.
