The Ouya game console release date is coming soon, but will the new device be able to compete with the likes of the upcoming Xbox One by Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 by Sony? Based on the console's price point, it may be able to get a jump on the early sales heading towards the holiday season.
According to a Newsmax.com report on June 14, the new video game console won't have the graphics capability of the new Xbox or Playstation devices, but it will boast a very low price tag. At just $99 USD, it could become a very fast-selling item for those looking to get their kids a lower cost alternative to Xbox One ($499 USD) and Sony PS4 ($399 USD).
The new video game platform is considered a micro-console and will use a modified version of the Google Android operating system. It won't have nearly the graphics gamers would see on the new PS4 or Xbox One, but it said to be more focused on "game-playing experience." That includes downloading games straight to the device, with no discs to buy, as well as ability to view various streaming content and other features.
Among its specs are an nVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM memory, 8 gigs of internal flash storage which can be expanded by a USB port, and the ability to make connections via WiFi, Ethernet or Bluetooth. Outputs on the device will include a USB 2.0 port, Micros USB port and HDMU up to 1080p HD. The device also includes a wireless controller, but offers connectivity for up to four, so friends can play along on the games.
Fans of the new product have been buzzing. One proudly boasted about the company's new gaming device, saying on Kickstarter:
"It's time we brought back innovation, experimentation, and creativity to the big screen,. Let’s make the games less expensive to make, and less expensive to buy. With all our technological advancements, shouldn't costs be going down? Gaming could be cheaper!"
Ouya's release date is June 25, and with a pre-order price tag of just $99 at Amazon, one would have to think it could sell a few units. However, will this device be able to sell in spite of people using their phones and tablets to play games, as well as the fact that serious gamers will be looking at the higher cost next gen platforms?
What do you think of Ouya? Are you a buyer, or do you prefer what the Xbox One and Sony PS4 have to offer?
