It’s no surprise that many single moms HATE VALENTINE’S DAY. They have no problem being single all other 364 days of the year, but every February when this dreaded holiday creeps around, they feel miserable. In days long past, perhaps they were secretly hopeless romantics before the single mom life beat them down.
Can you relate? Do you cringe at the sight of conversational candy hearts? Do you dread seeing whole sections of grocery stores dedicated to flowers, chocolate, and pink cupcakes, none of which you will be receiving? Then it’s time focus on the heart of the matter and jump-start your own happiness. After all, you can't expect anyone else to fulfill this obligation for you. Creating a happy life for yourself and your kids is your job now. If V-day brings you down, try moving in a different direction. How about focusing more on doing what makes you happy instead of expecting it to come from others?
Be adventurous and try implementing these ideas to inspire your own happiness:
• Play your favorite music
• Watch your favorite TV show while doing chores
• Light candles in your home
• Think positive thoughts
• Work towards your dreams in baby steps
• Be with like-minded friends
• Buy yourself flowers
• Create a kitchen garden
• Surround yourself by family heirlooms and objects you love
• Do something adventurous like taking a Zumba class
• Try new foods
• Laugh more
• Flip through magazines at the bookstore
• Go on a hike with family or friends
• Ride your bike at the beach
• Walk on the pier
• Decorate your work office for each holiday season
• Paint your nails a daring color
• Journal your hopes and goals
• Window shop
• Sample foods at a farmer's market
• Have breakfast in bed
• Snuggle up with your pet
• Watch the sun set
• Make some tea in your favorite cup
• Ride the carousel
Single mommies, how about creating your own happiness list to consult when life brings you down? What’s on your list that will bring a smile to your face today? Stop moping at the sight of pink and red hearts, and go do it!
