Outrage over Schwarzenegger sentence commute for Fabian Nunez son, Esteban Nunez

Outrage grows over Schwarzenegger sentence commute for Fabian Nunez son, Esteban Nunez

The public outrage over former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger commuting the manslaughter sentence for Esteban Nunez, the son of former California Assembly Speaker, Fabian Nunez, is showing no signs of slowing down.

On Tuesday, January, 4, a Los Angeles Times Editorial blasted Schwarzenegger, calling the decision a "big mistake" and suggested it could permanently tarnish his legacy.   The Times noted that Schwarzenegger only issued 10 commutations during his tenure and that there were likely many other candidates more deserving of having their sentences reduced.

The commutation was also a hot button issue on talk radio.  Locally here in the San Francisco Bay Area, on KGO radio, hosts Gil Gross and John Rothmann took up the issue.

Rothmann was outraged,  "I’m appalled by this," he told listeners.

Later, the host added, "This smacks of the ultimate of political corruption."

Rothmann reiterated the mountain of evidence against Esteban Nunez, including the fact that although he wasn't found guilty of stabbing the man who died, he stabbed two other people and destroyed evidence by throwing the knives used in the attack in the Sacramento River.

Rothmann said he has no doubts that if Schwarzenegger ran today against former Governor Gray Davis, that Davis would "win overwhelmingly."   Schwarzenegger replaced Davis in 2003 in a recall campaign.

When we heard that Governor Schwarzenegger had commuted the manslaughter sentence for Esteban Nunez, the son of former California Assembly Speaker, Fabian Nunez, it put the final nail in his coffin. Until now, we had given Governor Schwarzenegger the benefit of the doubt because our Legislature was difficult to deal with, but this move has made us lose faith in him as a person of ethics. Once he is out of office, we’re sure his plans are to return to the film industry. However, our plans are to boycott his movies, and we hope other Californians will make the same decision.

How blatant and in-your-face this is. A founding principle of this society is the idea of equal justice under the law. Instead we have one system of justice for the elites and one for the rest of us. This is the kind of thing that makes for revolutions.
