August 9th is a date that fans of the Outlander novels of Diana Gabaldon have waited for since 1991, when Outlander itself was first published. Diana Gabaldon also admits it is the fulfillment of a long held dream. There are several groups on Facebook dedicated to the novels, to Written in My Own Heart's Blood alone, and to the television series itself. There are also Twitter feeds for it. Most post pictures that are taken by Starz and its associates of the filming, the stars themselves and lots of other material that will fill you in. I know some people who are just now subscribing to Starz so they can watch the series.
This years series will focus on the first book only, Outlander. There will be sixteen episodes, and they will be split up, with eight being shown from August 9 to Sept. 27. The final eight will be show after the first of the year, probably beginning in January. Many readers are up in arms about the split in the episodes, but most are so happy to have the production being done for television they don't mind it.
It will be interesting to see how this popular novel translates to television. I think it will do so very well. Diana Gabaldon has had a certain hand in it and she tell her readers that she finds both the leads perfect (she did have something to do with the choices) and that the production is being done with a great deal of sensitivity to the fans.
Some readers are having Outlander parties on the night of the first episode. If you're a fan, you might check out the Facebook pages above for people who are inviting those in a certain area to a watch party, etc. It will be fun to see the beloved characters on our television screens at last.
So mark your calendars, set your DVR's, or find a viewing party, for August 9, at 9 p.m. Easter time, and enjoy! We've certainly waited long enough!
