Outkast plans 40-city tour to celebrate their 20th anniversary

Hip-hop group Outkast will be celebrating their 20th anniversary with a 40-city tour, according to a Jan. 13 press release on their website.

The first date on their tour will be Fri., April 11., for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif., and continue on to other locations.

“It's truly an honor to celebrate 20 years and still be free to do music the way we choose,” said Big Boi in a recent press release. “Don't just think outside the box, know that there is no box. I'm looking forward to rocking the stage with my Bro Ski and to all the fans -- stank you smelly much, this is for y'all!”

"And imagine, all we wanted to do was rap!" Andre "Andre 3000" Benjamin added. "I am thankful to have been a part of a group that allowed me to explore anything that came to mind and have fun doing it. Returning to the stage together is the most exciting way for us to thank everyone for their 20 years of supporting Outkast."

Both artists have garnered their own solo hits, as well as group hits that topped the Billboard charts.

Some of their hit songs never broke the top 10 but did well, such as "International Players Anthem (I Choose You" (peaked at no. 70, on the charts for 9 weeks); "I Can't Wait" (peaked at no. 40, on the charts for 13 weeks); "The Whole World" (peaked at no. 19, on the charts for 20 weeks); "So Fresh So Clean" (peaked at no. 30, on the charts for 20 weeks); "Rosa Parks" (peaked at no. 55, on the charts for 17 weeks); "Elevators (Me & You)" (peaked at no. 12, on the charts for 20 weeks); and "Player's Ball" (peaked at no. 37, on the charts for 20 weeks).

More successful songs were "Roses" (peaked at no. 9, on the charts for 21 weeks); "The Way You Move" (peaked at no. 1, on the charts for 39 weeks); "Hey Ya" (peaked at no. 1, on the charts for 32 weeks); and "Ms. Jackson" (peaked at no. 1, on the charts for 23 weeks).

The group also embarked on solo projects after their 2003 split album (and fifth studio album) "The Love Below/Speakerboxxx."

Andre 3000 poked his head into the hip-hop and R&B world occasionally (when he wasn't doing Gillette shaving cream commercials) to record recent songs, such as the remix to UNK's "Walk It Out," John Legend's "Green Light," Young Jeezy's "I Do" and T.I.'s "Sorry."

He also showed off his acting chops with 2005's "Four Brothers," the 2006 TV series "Class of 3000" and played the role of rock star Jimi Hendrix in 2013's "All Is By My Side." The latter film is set to release this year in the UK but no date has been set for the U.S. "All Is By My Side" did, however, premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Big Boi released 2012's solo album "Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors" after his 2007 album "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty."

Both artists starred in the 2006 film "Idlewild."
