Markos Keyto is one of Spain’s most prolific film artists. Though the title he most often receives is “Production Designer,” Markos does so much more – costumes, make up, hair, set decoration and any other visual aspect of a production you can think of. Films, TV shows, operas, musicals, commercials – you name it, he does it. Markos can turn a blank space into a fantasy world. Some call him a “genius”. Some call him a “magician”. He explains how one thing has led to another, and how opportunity after opportunity have led him to Hollywood’s doorstep.
After leading the art department to victory by transporting us to WWII Europe in the award winning film Tea With Mussolini, starring the incomparable Cher and two-time Golden Globe, Oscar and Emmy award winner Maggie Smith in 1999, it was clear to the European film industry that Markos had arrived. Since then, there has not been any period where he has not been working, bringing to life worlds that most people couldn’t even imagine. With the tough economic times in Spain, the entertainment industry has been one of the hardest hit, but Markos has continued to work on a string of big-budget projects.
Some of his best known film credits include the Italian Golden Globe winning film Signora, Fire at My Heart which was nominated for several Donatello Awards including Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Visual Effects, the Spanish zombie horror cult film Till Death Do Us Part which was a hit in festivals around the world, as well as Miguel Alvarez Wears a Wig and Ready To Talk, two widely successful films that won several international awards.
He also creates the stages for many of RTVE's top talk shows, as well as some outrageous sets for the network’s game shows and children’s programs in Spain. As his films appeared in international festivals Markos was contacted by film and television executives from Italy, Mexico, and the U.S., and is now slated to work his magic on several exciting productions in the near future. Markos says he’s sworn to secrecy about some of his projects, but he is able to tell me that he’ll be working on the feature I Walked With Zombies for Re-Animator Productions, as well as the films Low Life, 12 Angry Men, and The Pack.
If his extraordinary gift for creating new worlds for stage and screen wasn’t enough, Markos is also an incredibly skilled costume designer, who has designed wardrobes for film, television, and stage productions in every genre imaginable, as well as for the casts of entire theme parks.
He brought us into the world of European aristocrats in the 1940’s in Tea With Mussolini and Signora, as well as to a post-apocalyptic world ruled by zombies in Til Death Do Us Part. Some of his other work as a costume designer can be found in such titles as Licenciado Cantinas the Movie, El Humedo Aroma de la Tierra (The Wet Aroma of The Land), Pleno Al Quince (Located at 15), El Desafio De Los Dioses (The Challenge of the Gods), and Loco Mundo Loco (Crazy World). Markos has also designed costumes for the casts of famous international theme parks including the Warner Brother’s theme park in Madrid, as well as Isla Magic and Terra Mitica.
A true artist whose talent defies borders, and categories for that matter, Markos lives and breathes to create. Born with a wild imagination and an innate drive that fuels him to perfection, it is no mystery why Markos’ talents are so greatly sought after. Be sure to be on the look out for this international star as he adds his name to more and more Hollywood productions.
