When winter weather hits, it's easy to abandon the outdoor exercise activities you've enjoyed all summer and fall. After all, the days are short, the wind is cold and you're often facing snow- and ice-covered surfaces. But don't let the Minnesota winter sabotage your fitness plans. Here are some ideas for getting outside and staying fit, even in the winter.
- Strap on snowshoes. Once there's a good eight or so inches of snow on the ground, snowshoeing is an ideal way to enjoy the outdoors and get a great workout to boot. It's simple, fairly inexpensive and effectively works your lower body. If you don't own them, you can rent snowshoes at many Twin Cities venues, such as Hoigaard's in Minneapolis and the Three Rivers Park District.
- Try winter running or walking. Plenty of devoted walkers and runners brave the winter weather to pound the pavement or their favorite trails year-round. As long as you dress in technical, wicking layers, hydrate well and wear reflective gear when needed, you should be able to walk or run outdoors during the winter months without much problem. Consider studded cleats that strap to the bottom of your athletic shoes and are designed to provide traction on ice and snow if you're concerned about falls.
- Hit the ice. There's nothing like gliding across a picturesque ice rink to help you appreciate winter and strengthen your quadriceps and glutes. Many local parks have free outdoor rinks, but for the best ambiance, visit The Depot Ice Rink in downtown Minneapolis or the skating rink at St. Paul's Rice Park.
- Cross-country ski. Minnesota is well-known for its cross-country ski devotees, who swear by skiing's heart-pumping athleticism and serene meditativeness. Ski gear is often expensive; if you don't have your own set, you can rent cross-country skis from many local sites, including the Como Park Ski Center and area REI stores.
There's no reason to shut yourself indoors once the snow flies. Embrace one of these outdoor exercise options and you'll have a more active and fit winter season.
