Outdoor training, fitness South Florida style

The words are everywhere.

Words like ripped, buff, shredded, six pack, hard, and jacked. Words that either did not exist a generation ago or were known and spoken out loud only among the fiercest of hardcore iron warriors.

The images are everywhere too, especially here in the prime fitness market of South Florida

The rapper with the eighteen inch pipes flexing to an angry beat on stage, the pop star diva exposing her round deltoids, hard curvy legs, and sculpted stomach in the latest music video; even the underwear model is now an icon of symmetrical muscle mass combined with single digit body fat percentage.

What was once an obscure cult activity relegated to damp home basements and dusty warehouse fortresses of iron and rust is now a mainstream movement. The fitness movement crossed over long ago and became etched into the pop culture landscape, especially here in South Florida, the land of sunshine and hard bodies.

There are a variety of gyms and fitness centers in the Fort Lauderdale area. Most people belong to or at least have access to a nearby facility. But sometimes it is a nice change of pace and often a more fulfilling workout to exercise outside. With its subtropical climate and year round warm weather, South Florida is ideal for outdoor training.

There are many advantages to training outdoors. It can be far less of a hassle than driving to the gym, dealing with traffic, parking, crowds, not to mention the expense of gas. Exercising outside in the fresh air and sunshine is often a far superior stress reliever. It is the ultimate green activity

The other benefit to an outdoor workout is you are in control. There are variety of options available and the possibilities are endless. Any local softball or soccer field is the perfect place to engage in conditioning work such as agility drills or wind sprints. Dumbbells or even heavy hands can be used to add in upper body resistance work.

Most cities and townships have some kind of recreational park. These facilities usually have a walking or running trail of some type. Sometimes the park will have a  fitness area with a chin up bar, parallel bars and even a mini-obstacle course. Often times there will be yoga or boot camp classes offered, especially on weekend mornings. Check with the local municipality to find out what may be available in your area.

Getting outside and exercising is a terrific way to participate in fitness, relieve stress, and feel good.
